For my Desire, I used the 1280x800

I only use one screen though, so if you use more you should try a wider res

very nice mik! i want to change icons at the top but i understand you have to root? i dont want to fry my phone (htc hero) im looking to get hte desire hd in januray/feb so wil lstart experimenting then

You don't have to root to change icons. Install LauncherPro

Scan the code from here to add a theme server to Oxygen updater, download and install the iNexus theme.

Icons can be found here. I've changed mine now to the text only version you can find on the same page.

Custom flash screen can be done (as long as you're S-OFF) using the app and instructions here.

Calendar is a customised LauncherPro widget, you can grab the updated APK from here. You'll need the paid version of LauncherPro to use the widget (the updated APK picks up your license).
