Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

I'm looking to add an oscilating multi-tool to my tool collection, I don't think it will see a huge amount of use but don't want to buy absolute rubish! I saw this while browsing Amazon and it looks like a pretty good deal. Any thoughts before I pull the trigger?

Looks good for the money.

I've got a dewalt 18v multi tool, don't use it often but it's been superb for when I have needed it.

Personally i'd go cordless just for practicality uses. I know B&Q were doing a free battery and charger with Einhell tools but unsure if that's still an option

As above, i have the Dewalt 18V one. I had initially bought a Makita corded one, but the cable was really thick which made it a little awkward for manouvering in tighter spaces where these tools come into their own.

So my bosch hedge trimmer has given up the ghost, i have borrowed a pole style trimmer which is this one: Swift Hedge trimmer amazon link
All my cordless tools are dewalt and i've got a decent selection of batteries so looked to see what dewalts one is which is this one: Dewalt hedge trimmer

DeWalt one is more expensive which isn't an issue really but i was curious if the 18v DeWalt would be as powerful to use as the 40v Swift one? Logically the answer would be no the Swift is more powered but can't see DeWalt selling something crappy.

Any ideas on the above or of other pole hedge trimmers? Ideally cordless and if not dewalt then would need battery and charger inc

I've got an 18v DeWalt hedge trimmer (non pole, this one https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01E0PH9U4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) and have been happy with its performance. Obviously not ground-breaking in terms of power, but it gets the job done!

I've an 18V Makita cordless that cost about 70 quid. I was pretty surprised at what it will chop through and how long it lasts on a 3AH battery.
Same here, they seem to run for quite a long time on the standard 3amp batteries.

I suspect most of the modern "good brand" 18v lithium type trimmers will probably do quite well for the average domestic user these days, to be honest I've been really impressed with modern cordless tools as I remember the days when your average cordless tool might have been lucky to have a run time of 15-30 minutes under load and struggled with the sort of things that they just breeze through now.

I’ll be buying myself a Makita DJR187 recip saw shortly (already have other Makita 18v tools and batteries), that I’ll initially be using to rip up an old deck, before going on to demolish a couple of old rotten sheds, and then bit by bit, remove a small tree from the front garden. Is there a particular brand/type of blade people recommend for these? Obviously the ability to cut wood, and possibly wood with nails in it will be a priority.

Thanks.

I have recently got myself the Ryobi multi tool, got to say I love. Used it so many times already. Very useful tool to have in your toolbox.

Aldi have theirs in store at the moment for £30. The battery is also online at £15 (plus £15 for the charger etc).

Thanks just seen this and will pull the trigger I think as the Ferrex stuff seems to review pretty well and have expanded into a decent range.

Is there a go-to cordless drill recommendation for DIY use?

Ive watched some youtube reviews. Milwaukee seems to consistently get good reviews. Ultimately would be thinking of sticking to one manufacturer so I can get a drill, impact driver, multitool and circular saw with the same battery system (if it makes sense to do this for price reasons).

There's a lot of choice though at a lot of different prices. The kits containing a drill and impact driver seem to offer best value compared to the individual prices.

Ive bought cheap battery drills in the past (although not for 10+ years so the battery technology has come a long way since then).

Im willing to pay a reasonable price for good batteries, power, versatility etc. But I can't go to top end prices.

But if ultimately the cheapest way is to buy cheap mixed brand eg Argos stuff, and it only lasts a few years and throw it away, then I can go this route also.

At the sensible price points the ‘big 4’ tool makers are very similar. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

I’d just look at the wider ecosystem and see what takes your fancy and the prices of those tools.

By the big 4 I mean:
Dewalt
Makita
Milwaukee
Bosch

My cordless stuff is Dewalt but that’s not to say you might prefer a different brand. My corded stuff is a mixture of all kinds.

These two kits seem best value I can find right now?

Milwaukee

Dewalt

Both have 2x 4Ah batteries for £200-£220.

Either of these better or something else? Is the price good based on previous sales that youve seen from time to time, I could wait longer.

Seems to be a big price jump going up to the 5Ah battery size.

Dewalt 796 will do everything you need for DIY.

Nice and light with 2x 2Ah batteries for £135 ( was on hot deals for £110 recently which was a bargain)
