Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

This was a half price Black Friday steal.

98 x 25mm screwdriver bits (16 x Phillips (4 x PH0, PH1, PH2 and PH3), (18 x slotted (3 x SL3, SL4, SL5, SL5.5, SL6 and SL6.5), (12 x PZ (3 x PZ0, PZ1, PZ2 and PZ3), (12 x Hex (3 x H3, H4, H5 and H6), (12 x Square (3 x SQ0, SQ1, SQ2 and SQ3), (21 x TX (3 x T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30 and T40), (7 x TS (1 x TS10, TS15, TS20, TS25, TS27, TS30 and TS40)), 13 x 90mm screwdriver bits (3 x Phillips (PH2)), (3 x PZ ( PZ2)), (7 x TX (2 x T10 and T15)), (1 x T20, T25 and T30), 1 x bit holder and 1 x quick change chuck.

That was £16?

But still I stand by the original point. Why do you need 3 or 4 of each bit? 3x ph1, ph2, ph3 etc? 3x Allen key size 6, 3x T20....

A small kit of 1x a variety of bits would surely be more useful.

TBF these sound like precisely the 4 or 5 bits that wear out most often. PZ1 and 2 are sold in bulk bags for that reason.

Na there's 3 of everything in that kit posted above not just the common ones.

I need a selection of slot heads, some pozidrive, some Allen keys, some torx, some torx sockets for the car, a socket set adapter, some security torx, security Allen.

I'd rather have a larger selection of sizes than multiple bits of the same size. Eg sometimes you come across a large Allen key (for example on a bicycle crank) or large torx (on a car).

It’s a good job you get plenty of spares as they snap like crazy in a normal screwgun let alone an impact.

If you are buying bits for an impact driver then I’d highly recommend just getting a box of PZ2 and a decent bit holder to start with (or what ever most of your screws are). Even impact rated bits wear out reasonably quickly.

If you buy a box of spax then just buy the relevant bits as you need them. I’d say 99% of my screws I’d want to put an impact driver on are just standard PZ2.

For automotive work you’ll want ratchet compatible bits, recommend Halfords professional, wait for a half price offer. I have their Torx bits and Torx sockets, and they are fine. But it’s ultimately a different set of tools for a different job.

Every thing else I just have a dedicated driver. Those speciality screws are not usually found anywhere near anything you’d want to approach with an impact gun and thus most bit sets are not impact rated. I wouldn’t put an Allen bit anywhere near an impact driver, the heads on Allen’s are famous for just rounding out at the mere sight of any torque.

If you want a descent torx and Allen sets then I’d recommend these from Wera:

They also do a stubby Allen set^^

For more specialist stuff like security bits and tri-wings when an ifixit kit has never let me down.

Impact bits are almost consumables. The Erbauer bits are terrible though and don't last long. I can recommend the 50mm Milwaukee Shockwave bits, though the box I got some time ago didn't have the red shank and I paid about £5 or £6 for them. They definitely last much longer and even at £12 they're more cost effective than a load of cheap Erbauer bits that last a few screws.

If you have Lidl Plus on your phone they have 20% off all Parkside DIY and Garden for the next 7 days. They had a lot of Cordless stuff last week including a cordless lawnmower and strimmer so now is a good time to buy. If you are going to get some cordless tools, batteries and chargers make sure you get the twin battery charger as that's the only one with quickcharge plus for things like mowers you should be looking at the 4Ah batteries.

I see Lidl has a power tool weekend offers so looked down it - Prices have almost doubled -A SDS Power drill is now £50 and other basic tools are up in price by quite a bit - Three yrs ago when you could say -I will have that it's now I ain't paying that but I see that all main line power tools have also gone up.
I would say a box of assorted SDS bit's are just on the edge at £15 - Seems all the value for money things are now a thing of the past.

I also noticed the roll of Gaffa tape that was 99p is now £3.99 - Glad i used to put things for a £1 in my basket even when I didn't need them but not any more.

Treated myself to some new drill bits - One box of metail bits and one for wood.

Sat in garage this morning sorting out the drill bits and came to the conclusion they are all cra-p so I will bin them all now but keep any over 10mm .

For some reason I can't upload a Imgur picture -tried a picture that I have posted before and can't see that.

All I get is "view attachment 365353" and it won't open - tried reducing size but no luck.

This is odd I couldn't see picture in preview but trying again it's posted below

Not necessarily - I’m seeing a lot of weirdness with images too. Sometimes gotta refresh the page to get rid of that same message you saw.
