Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Hi all.

Anyone recommend a ladder for home use outside?

I'm thinking one of those combination ladders that is a stepladder, small work platform and lean to ladder all in one. And the fold up small for storage.

However I don't think they are long enough to enable me to reach the guttering level. Maybe it's not feasible for me to reach that high unless I buy a standard extension ladder. But I do need to make some guttering repairs so not sure what to do.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Check little giant ladders out.

Their king kombo and their standard combination ladders are brilliant. They’re quite heavy though but come with wheels they’re sturdy as and you feel confident standing on them and using them if that makes sense.

Half decent 10m aluminum ladder will set you back 200-300 notes.

I've got step-ladders that cost 300 notes, so consider 300 for 10m really cheap.

Thanks. Those little giant ladders are quite expensive, I could buy a portable scaffold tower for the same money which might be a better idea to get up to guttering level.

For a combination ladder Im looking at this one: https://www.laddersandscaffoldtower...69Kn4IiEmtK6zXvEjW3X3TVZgSFK-8NRoCsGQQAvD_BwE

Which in the largest size is £140. Gets me 4.75m length in fully extended form and folds up small.

Depends what you really need it for?

As good as those combination ladders are (I have a set), they only go as high as safely reaching the second story window ledges on most houses.

You mentioned getting to the guttering, so you'd need at least something like a 6.5m ladder (£175)

I'm lucky and have triples that can reach the the guttering on just two and have extending roof ladders and yes they are expensive, but I feel very safe and comfortable at full length and feel terrified when I use click click ladders to reach the first floor windows at the in laws or a friend who has a set.
There are obviously very good click clicks, but you have to spend to get that right feeling.

Old house here as you know. Option is to pay people or do jobs myself which includes getting up to roof level.

I eventually need to repoint a whole wall all the way to roof level. I also have some leaking guttering up there.

But the side entry where I need to do this is only 1m wide, so I don't know if I can use a ladder there, the angle will be quite steep.

I need a general ladder for other things as I don't have one, so that's why I'm thinking a combination ladder I can use in the house too for decorating, on the stairs etc.

That will be too tight, unless you can anchor the ladder at that height, but still risky.
You would also have issue's with a portable scaffolding you mentioned above, with that width + height.

That's the other downside to a combination ladder - for indoor use, for the most part (unless you are actually going to use it in platform mode), then it's much bigger and bulkier than an equivalent step ladder.

In hindsight I personally would have been better buying a separate 6 step stepladder, and a 3 section extension ladder.

I get you, but storage is a problem as well. A normal step ladder is 6ft-7ft tall ish, and it will struggle to fit anywhere for storage as I don't have a garage. The combo ladders fold up to 1.2m in height so will fit in my shed.

I have nowhere to store a proper extension ladder other than attached to an outside fence on some hooks, which isn't great.

Have you made any friends with neighbors/is there a WhatsApp group? My ladders are unused 99% of the time so I offer them up whenever anybody asks in the group.

There's no whatsapp group, I do know a few of them so I could ask directly but Ive never seen any evidence of any of them having ladders. Most of my neighbours are well over retirement age. There's maybe one or two of them that might have some.

I've bought the £99 combination ladder from Wickes for now. It's a step ladder, platform and wall ladder in one. It's decent, will do for all low level jobs. Can reach to first floor window level with it. Folds up into 4 segments 1m high in total so easy to store.

Been thru loads of Pz2 bits on building my shed/workshop (probably 1500 screws and 25+ bits)

Id use dewalt ones for heavy driving. Makita are trash, the milwaukee I had aren't much better.

Haven't yet tried the wera ones but heard good things.

I'm 1000+ screws atm and still on the same Bosch impact bit in a Bosch impact driver.

I'd be concerned at using 25+ bits for that amount of screws.
