Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Don't really need any other tools now as i've bought the majority as bare tools. But only have a 2ah battery and a 1.5ah battery. The DCh273 linked above at Amazon comes with the 2 batteries so if that works out then i'm onto a winner. If it doesn't i'll just pick up the batteries as don't really have any need for the SDS drill.

I looked at the circular saw with batteries but all the kits were really expensive at over £300, compared to ~£100 for the saw and then £120 for 2 5ah batteries.

On a side note i'd ignore all the claims that Flagpower/Floureon batteries are as good as Dewalt ones. I've had 3 and all report as being charged when i plug them in even when they're dead. Luckily i bought all from Amazon who accept returns with minimal fuss. Seems if you get a good one then you're onto a winner but quality control is awful. As i suppose you should expect.

Hmmm, after trying my luck with a few different brands of cheap compatible batteries with no success i've decided to just order some genuine ones (unless the drill from Amazon does actually get delivered)

The question now is do i buy 2x 5ah batteries for ~£120 or do i spend a little extra and get a 9ah flexvolt battery. Weighing up between the lack of flexibility of only having one battery and the future proofing of being able to add Flexvolt tools in the future.

Didn't you order that SDS drill that comes with 2 x 5ah batts?

Also regarding the blade for the mitresaw, theres no reason you cant use both blades. I used like 3 different blades with my mitresaw for different tasks. The metal cutting blade is useful for cutting wood with nails in and general rough cutting, but a higher tooth count blade is useful for more refined work, like mitring architraves etc. I don't think you need to stick with Rage branded blades, usually blades will have a max rpm rating, but i have never seen a blade with a min rpm rating. If you do want to stick with Rage though I'm sure they make a fine toothed crosscut blade as well as their metal cutting blades.

This arrived today :D

Evolution Rage 3 double bevel mitre saw.

£150 as a B grade / open box from their eBay outlet. Had all the optional accessories in the box too.

Excellent news :)

I was close to getting a job at Amazon, would've been fantastic to get inside their business.

Also found a voicemail from 3 weeks ago inviting me to an interview at Travis Perkins. Imagine the discounts i could've got!

I've got the dsc391. I've only used it for fairly light, rough work, but I've been impressed with it so far. I bought it more as a timesaver than anything as I had a load of doors and kitchen units to dispose of and just wanted them in more manageable bits.

Yeah mine's only bought do fairly light stuff too.

Used it for the first time last night, pretty impressed with it and feels solid enough. Got a pile of yellow crud from the blade on the edges so will be good when all thats worn off the blade. Just need some pliers to adjust the angle as whoever tightened it up in the factory had the strength of the hulk!

Used the saw quite a bit more today and it's been decent. My only irritation is the saw cover which slides up during the cut seems to catch at the same point every time. I can manually push the lever a bit but which holding wood, the saw and then moving the lever i kept knocking the cut and leaving some cut lines.

Hi chaps. Looking back through I see some of you have used the Titan Nail Gun. I hate to admit to being a brand snob but, having exchanged on our Victorian property last weekend and us having no money and my fiancé reminding me to be sensible with my money I have to get over that.

We need to re-erect a picture rail and looking at youtube videos, there's no way I'm not using a nail gun. Would you guys still recommend the Titan? It seems a very good price at Screwfix and considering my usage will be minimal, couple of rooms max, it looks to be suitable.

Yeah definately, even though it only states 25mm nails it has markings for 32mm nails too. I bought mine when fitting flooring and like you there was no way i was fitting beading without a nail gun!

It doesn't always fire all the way in though so also invest in a set of nail punches just for the final bit :)

Excellent - thanks Marv. Are the 200 or so nails that come with it good enough or would I be best buying some others? Any to recommend?

Can anyone recommend a half decent miter saw for the job of replacing all my skirtings and architraves? It seems you can spend anywhere between £80 and £1000 depending on how flush you feel. Ideally I'd rather not spend more than £200.

I got one of those evolution rage saws on eBay refurbished. Think it was about £50 (eventually needed a new blade which was £40 tho!)

Was it the rage3-s? Did you find it cut square enough? There are some negative reviews on amazon complaining of squareness but I'm always wary of reviews because there's a few idiots out there.

Yeah it was rage 3

Cut a lot of flooring and not had an issue (I think skirting should be scribed rather than cut in the corners anyway?). Also mitred some Scotia. For DIY use I'd recommend.

For cutting skirtings I dont think the squareness will matter as the edges will all be relative.
