Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Just picked up DUB363PT2V for garden Vac. Found place with 2x5a batteries for £248 when everywhere else is more expensive for just bare unit. If this doesnt work then will have to look at one of those leaf sweeper. Got so much off this tree birds drop driving me nuts.
 
Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent set of drill bits?

I have a set from years ago, the smaller drill bits have all snapped, there's no larger ones than about 8mm in the set, and its full of other things I don't need like allen key bits, screwdriver bits etc.

I just want a nice selection of primarily wood drill bits, in a range of sizes from very small to reasonably large. Some metal bits would be useful too although not used much. I don't need masonry bits as the SDS gets used for that. And I don't want any 'extras' like allen key bits or anything else like that.
 
Bosh do some decent multi bit sets, but if you don't want all the other 'accessories' that usually come with those just get a decent set of Bosh Metal and wood bits separately, around £20 for metal set and should be sub £10 for the wood bits.

Second that - much better to get the smaller sets, as imo far more annoying when you break a couple of bits (as you inevitably do) in a big set. Much easier/cheaper to replace the individual smaller sets as required.

Even the cheap Aldi/Lidl drill bit sets are alright - and are so cheap that you can buy a set e.g. of masonry for a specific project and not care if they are blunt etc by time you've finished.
 
I seem to only ever need very small or very large drill bits, never the ones in the middle. Neither of those sets comes with very small pilot bits or very large hole drilling bits. Maybe I need to buy those separately. I recently bought a 12mm brad point bit on its own from Toolstation (edit: it was Screwfix and brand Erbauer) and it was rubbish at drilling the holes I needed.

Do you keep a separate set of smaller bits for smaller pilot holes? What about your much larger bits, separate set or individual purchases on a need by need basis?

How small are you going? That set goes down to 3mm. I do have an Erbauer HSS set (purchased from Screwfix 2016!) that might go smaller but I'd have to look to see the exact sizes. I also have an assortment of spade bits, some as a set but also supplemented with individual bits as you can usually guarantee you have every size of drill bit but the one you need at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon.

I'm also waiting for Amazon to drop the price on the Bosch PBD 40 drill press, at which point I'll get a set of Forstner bits for that as they are neater than a spade bit (but generally don't like going as deep).

Finally, I have one combined drill / countersink bit from Trend but I found that so much of time a saver if you need a pilot hole + countersink. I'd buy a set now I know how useful they are

I quite often pilot hole at 1, 1.5 or 2mm when using small screws. Even with a 4mm flooring screw Im currently using Im only piloting at 2mm because I don't like to risk the hole being too enlarged and the screw not getting a good grip.

I have some spade bits but they are not very good at cutting, just tear the wood up, probably not sharp.

I have one of those combined pilot/countersink bits but the grub screw has come loose and I can't find a small enough allen key to fit it.

Fair enough. Axminster have a set which goes down to 1mm (brad point 3mm and up) but not cheap at £52 for the set (though Axminster don't usually rubbish)

I use this set for pilot and countersinking, it's actually a set for plug cutting but I only needed that for a specific job, now I just use for pilot and sinking, but you could probably find a cheaper set just for piloting and countersinking.

God knows what my planer hit today when planing today but it bent the blade retainer without me realising and planed the inside of itself a bit :( bits of yellow everywhere.
I've not got a spare blade retainer so ordered one

Hoping the planer despite being a bit planed a bit will be ok once the new retainer and blade are on. If not then new planer it is.
 
My new favourite tool DeWalt DCF892 mid power impact 1084nm of power, don't know how I went so long without one just for doing the little jobs on the cars.
