Is winning individual stages more important than having the best individual time at the end of the tour?
I'm glad to see C. Froome in 5th but the 21" gap isn't easy to break down while in the peleton?
Guessing you are on ITV? I watch using the Eurosport Player, which is around a fiver a month. You can get the option for multicam and one of the main cameras doesn't cut to breaks and also has no commentary.
No. Stage wins are prestigious big time and are heavily contested but the GC/Yellow Jersey is the pinnacle and the ultimate goal of the majority of the teams. Some of the teams with non GC contenders will spend the tour looking for stage wins primarily because they know they cannot compete in the GC, Orica BikeExchange being a prime example on this tour. Stage wins on the tour are something any rider would want in their palmares of course but it gets their team/sponsor TV time and is a massive achievement for all involved.
Froome/Quintana and the rest fo the GC guys are not contesting anything at the moment as the stages are flat. They simply remain in the peloton and protected by their team mates. The main goal of the GC guys in the first week is basically to survive each stage without having a crash/getting injured.
Once we get into the mountain stages, this is where the GC will be contested and you will see team work and attacks from the GC contenders so that they can take time and increase their lead in GC.
At this point in the tour it is totally normal to see all the favourites a good bit of time down and to see them taking it very easy, it will completely change come the mountains don't worry
