Pro Cycling Discussion 2016

Is winning individual stages more important than having the best individual time at the end of the tour?

I'm glad to see C. Froome in 5th but the 21" gap isn't easy to break down while in the peleton?

Guessing you are on ITV? I watch using the Eurosport Player, which is around a fiver a month. You can get the option for multicam and one of the main cameras doesn't cut to breaks and also has no commentary.

No. Stage wins are prestigious big time and are heavily contested but the GC/Yellow Jersey is the pinnacle and the ultimate goal of the majority of the teams. Some of the teams with non GC contenders will spend the tour looking for stage wins primarily because they know they cannot compete in the GC, Orica BikeExchange being a prime example on this tour. Stage wins on the tour are something any rider would want in their palmares of course but it gets their team/sponsor TV time and is a massive achievement for all involved.

Froome/Quintana and the rest fo the GC guys are not contesting anything at the moment as the stages are flat. They simply remain in the peloton and protected by their team mates. The main goal of the GC guys in the first week is basically to survive each stage without having a crash/getting injured.
Once we get into the mountain stages, this is where the GC will be contested and you will see team work and attacks from the GC contenders so that they can take time and increase their lead in GC.
At this point in the tour it is totally normal to see all the favourites a good bit of time down and to see them taking it very easy, it will completely change come the mountains don't worry ;)

Good knowledge! I'm on Eurosport on Sky but might look into that for sneaky work watching. :)

That was jolly close! I'm quite enjoying watching the TdF while I'm housebound :D

Besides, if you're going over the line with your tyre that way round then something is going badly wrong.

First day in the mountains and some big names are getting dropped already although the pace being set by Movistar has been rather relentless.

Someone had to eventually **** their pants and do something considering the break was at 15mins with 60km to go. With GvA in it. Insane.

Ettix a lot to lose today, again questionable tactics as this is an Alaphillipe prime targetted stage with Dan Martin being a strong contender on this too. They chucked a lot of eggs in basket yesterday getting Kittel that win and seem to care more about tomorrow than this stage. Very odd.

I like GvA, think he has this one bagged no problem now.

Aye don't think they will catch GvA. Alaphillipe looked like he was just hanging on at the rear of the peleton which is a shame as he's in my Velogames team

Edit: after saying that Alaphillipe is back up near the front of the peleton, although the peleton isn't bothering with chasing down anymore.

Great move and ride from both GVA and DeGendt! Thought Movistar had burnt all their matches and had left a bit of danger, but coped well with just Valverde at the end. Although not good for when they get into the mountain when sky had 3-4 riders still left!
