Pro Cycling Discussion Thread 2015

Anyone done any W/kg figures for Quintana's climb yesterday? Oh wait, he's not wearing a Team SKY jersey...

Plenty of people drawing attention to the fact it was a top 25 performance and even higher once you exclude the 2004 ITT. Froome gets the spotlight because he's leading but Movistar's performance raised a few eyebrows. Doesn't get any coverage here because cycling journalists are only capable of writing positive things about British riders.

I also think the French rightly or wrongly warm more to Quintana because he's not British and rides with more panache than Froome.

That's not true about Froome Thomas, he was hanging on.*

Good Tour but not a classic. Thomas and Sagan are the stand-out riders for me. And Froome won it by being aggresive in the first week (including elbows out!) and being able to defend with a vastly superior team to Movistar. Thomas, Porte and Poels are a phenomenal set of team mates.

Ok, good, see you all in a couple of weeks for the Vuelta.

Interesting notes from Oleg Tinkov. I guess from my not well informed point of view that he actually makes some decent points. How much do cycling teams get supported by? To me its seems like not a very profitable business to be in, but then again owning a sports team of any kind can yield little in the way of profits, if at all.

Interesting article but what seems odd to me is this bit:

Their strength in not actually the money, as other people have said. We have similar budgets; we spend 27 million Euro, while they have about 33 million Euro. The fundamental difference between Team Sky and other teams is that they have a long-term project. They’ve got a minimum of a five-year plan, if not even ten years thanks to a commitment from Murdoch’s empire.

A quick Google reckons Tinkov is worth 1.5 billion USD. What's to stop him committing to a 10 year plan with that kind of wealth?

True, though Wiki reckons it's been Tinkoff-Saxo since 2012 so the sponsors must be in for $70 million or more already.

Inner Ring has good looks at Sky's accounts over the past few years

It’s not a big deal for the company either, its annual marketing spend is buried in its own accounts, £1,117 million meaning the pro team is about 2% of Sky UK’s marketing budget.
