Problem With Upstairs Neighbours Young Child

You never know, upstairs may be thinking of another child. Fingers crossed, a crying baby might drown out the 2yo playing :)

Kids are going to play, loudly, my 3yo sounds like an elephant upstairs. Not much you can do about it. I would think about moving. We moved into a detached house to avoid neighbours last year, best thing we've ever done, apart from produce two noisy kids!

Echoing a lot of the above advice, the only two choices i see you have the option of is moving, or wearing ear plugs.

We've got an elephant who lives in the flat above ours, and she loves to hoover twice a day every day. Whilst we do get annoyed that she makes a lot of noise, and sometimes late into the night. Thankfully most nights she's actually quiet.

But if that annoys me, then yep i feel your pain.

First place I ever owned was a ground floor flat in a converted farmhouse. For the first year the upstairs flat was empty so had no idea how bad the sound proofing was. Once someone moved in I could hear everything from them putting a cup on the table to using the toilet (which was above my bed). Had the place on the market within the week and ended up making a bit on the move. Completely understand how this can take over your life so just suck it up and move somewhere the same cannot happen.

As for the kids, my two girls are very well behaved but got complaints from my girlfriends downstairs neighbour after staying there for the weekend. Unless there is a no children rule they are going to run around and make noise.

Living above noisy people isn't that much better although its easier to give them back a little noise.
I lived in a top floor flat and below was rented out to various people over the years, some good and some bad. In general terms it was a quiet flat.

When I did sell it I after having rented it out for a few years I had one day with viewings where downstairs arrived and then played music so loud I was embarrassed. The next day they were fine and the property sold.

To the OP, with a rental above you're always going to be down to luck with who goes in next. It could be a great neighbour or it could be even worse :(

Offer to swap apartments? But in seriousness, I've had this before in our last place, the owners above were accommodating to a degree but tbh you can't stop a kid from running around (although no reason for it to be happening at 2am)! We did ask that he at least not wear shoes in the flat. The new family that moved in redid the whole apartment (the noise from the works was unbearable) and they doubled the thickness of their floor for sound-proofing but we could still hear the footsteps. Unfortunately that's just a problem with living in flats :(

I don't know why anyone would buy a flat, horrid things.

My advice, buy some sleeping tablets, break them up, add water then apply this paste to chocolate buttons and post them through the letter box.... joke

Or move :)

Sounds horrendous op and is worth noting. Sounds like nothing can be done apart from move. Which is obviously not an option (or an expensive one) after just moving in.

I think it would make your life a misery.

Note to self. Never buy a flat as you can't control what's around you.

Hope you figure something out

Pay the landlord to fit good quality thick underlay & thick rugs if he will allow.
Fit sound deadening plasterboard to your ceiling.

Both will make a good difference, neither will be that expensive, & preferable to moving.

Ear plugs. I did that in the past when I lived in a flat in London - was good enough to be honest.

You can try sound proofing if you have the height - I did this in my bedroom of an old victorian mansion conversion, ceilings were 17 or so foot high - so plenty of space to create a bit of sound deadening. It more than halved the noise, improved insulation and also reduced the noise I made for the neighbours (music, tv etc...).

Or just get up, 6am isn't that early anyway - and then you can always have a snooze in the day.

Ultimately, the kid is having fun and playing (or at least I'm assuming that). It's one of the disadvantages of flat living unfortunately :(
Wait, you had ceilings 17 foot high?!

I'm assuming you don't have kids? This is just normal behaviour for them. If you live in a flat you should expect to hear things. Although you could use this to your advantage, have screaming, wild, loud, porn quality sex at 4am every day, 2 birds, 1 stone :)

Not at 2-3 am in the morning..

OP has said quite a few times its not the general noise it the 2am / 3am / 6am constant noise that's the problem.

any kid up that early making noise sounds like a problem too me. They should be sleeping through.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

The sound proof plasterboard is an option. Doesn't look to expensive but I also imagine this may work better for airborne noise such as TV or voices, not so much impact noise.

Again, thank for your help!
