Project car boot

You have done a really good job on the braiding. I really want to do some on my cabling, but am quite horrified at how much this stuff costs, considering there are more important things in my rig to upgrade. Is it just me or is braiding fairly pricey for what it is?
 
If you shop around you can pick it up fairly cheaply but I guess yeah for some lengths of nylon weave I guess it isn't cheap (but then what is these days). It's certainly a hack of a lot cheaper than buying pre braided cables thouogh which to be honest aren't always of a great quality of workmanship.
 
:D Great thinking on using mounting tape for the fans, will have an extra bonus of no vibrations too, nice :), I'll keep that trick in mind.
The braided cables are looking great too, forgot to comment on those earlier :D.
 
Decided I would put HDD rack in after all and if it doesn't look righ I can always take it out.

This is a test fit so screws are not fixed which explains why it appears to be sagging a bit at the back.

Fan and pwer cables will be routed behind it so as not to obstruct airflow or be seen.

As I'm now thinkig of actually using this PC I'm giving thought to cooling the CPU a bit better. when I ran it as a rest bench (see start of thread) I thought it was running a bit hot, but then I'm not used to the model of CPU so may be normal. I think it was running at about 45 degrees at idle.

Thoughts welcome

Yeh you are right on about the workmanship sometimes being a bit crap. But some people don't mind forking out if it means less effort...

HDD cage looks awesome!! This orange business is really growing on me! Yeh the Intel standard cooler can allow things to run a little warm, I'm using a Scythe Shuriken and it idles around 40C-45C.
 
I've now finished the piece I fabricated that will serve to hide some of the spagetti from the old non modular PSU i'm using.

the magnetic tape I used wasn't cheap though,

Cost me a whopping 99p from the local craft shop. (which really oddly had no end of stuff that interrested me as a modder.

So this is the plate, small notch cut in to accomodate framework and pained matt black as per inside of case.



The magnetic tape with it's field strength now at about 0.5 Tesla (it's pushing itself apart)




A couple of strips of it holding the plate in place. It's actually adhesive on one side but at 0.5T this isn't actually needed.






In the next few days hope to mod a white CCFL to give a true orange light and sort out the mess on the front.

I like what you've done with the front fans, and the HDD rack is a good addition imo.

I think orange sata cables would look superb in this! :D

Hadn't actually though of that, I was going to braid them black. I think I actually have some orange ones somewhere if I haven't used them in someone elses build along the way.

I'll dig them out and post a piccy see what you think.
 
Managed to find the old sata cables in the back of a cupboard

Also found an old tuniq tower 120 I forgot I had. If I remember rightly it lights up blue which is not an effect i'm after as i'm going for orange lighting inside (maybe some uv also)

I guess i could probably disable the lighting on it but it seems a shame.

White ccfls which I intend to convert to orange and of course braid up nicely.

 
You could always mod the tuniq to have orange LEDs instead. Orange isn't a common colour for LEDs but they are available.
 
looked at doing an led mod for previous build but chickened out as i couldn't sus all the voltaages and resistance side of things

if any one knows exactly what leds and bits i might need do please let me know
 
You could always wire 4 or 5 Leds in series on a 12v line from molex connector. This way each one would see 2.5-3.0v each which is fine.

Alternatively you can often buy multiple LEDs from the well known online auction site that come with free resistors to step down from 12v. As an example I have some 5mm blue LEDs which I think are standard brightness and have 470 ohm resistors supplied. Check this too http://ledcalc.com/#

I've bought a few sets from there for silly, back of the sofa prices.

Edit: Just checked my spare LED fan and they are actually wired in Parallel with resistors.
