Project CARS 2

Racing sims aren't normally my thing (I play a bit of Forza on xbox with controller but that is about it) but I think I may enjoy it in VR. Is a wheel a must and do you have to be a real racing nut to get something out of this?
To me for any racing sim, a wheel is a must - however, the controller support for this title is supposed to be decent. I wouldn't expect it to play like Forza with a pad though.

I played PCARS2 with a controller before I got my wheel. It's perfectly playable on controller in VR, but the difference is using a controller still feels like you're playing a game. Using a wheel almost convinces you that you're driving the cars for real, and you're really there. It's a completely different and amazing experience - even if you're rubbish at racing sims like me.

I'm not a racing nut but I enjoy it, and I'd say I'm glad I bought a wheel and pedals as the 360 controller just wasn't cutting it.

I wouldn’t say a wheel is a must. I use my Xbox controller and am really enjoying it. VR is stunning!!

You can change the difficulty from ‘hopeless’ to ‘real life F1 test pilot’, so whether you’re good at driving games or not, you’ll manage to have fun. As for being a racing nut... there isn’t much to do apart from racing cars!

I just came home from work after a month and my steering wheel (G29) is acting strange. If I turn right it's fine, but one degree left and it jumps to full lock. Does it in PC2 & Dirty Rally.

Anyone experienced that? I've reinstalled driver, recalibrated etc.. but no joy.

Does it work in the windows game controller setting?

I took it back to Curry's and was amazed to find them give me a full refund.

I'll see if I can pick up a new wheel during the sales, but no way I'm going for a G29 again. Unfortunately, PC2 is now on hold until I get one.

I have a G29, previously had a G27 which ran for years with no issues, and before that a DFGT. I've kept them all as backups and I'm using the G29 now while the T500 is in for repair. Yours must have been a bad one. I know there have been more issues with G29 than they ever had with G27/25. Not much to touch it for the price though. The T300 is a better wheel but you have to pay more for it. I can recommend Thrustmaster, but I know the T300 has had problems as well. Nothing is faultless unfortunately.

An alternative to the Logitech G920 / G29 is the Thrustmaster TMX. It's the cut down version of the Thrustmaster TX series and doesn't have the removable wheel and has a different mechanism. Unlike the Logitech it doesn't have a faux leather trim and just plastic and rubber grips.

They're about £150 for the wheel and pedals. You'd probably what to upgrade the pedals though for the Pro set with clutch.

It's probably the cheapest way to get a decent force feedback wheel and if you decide to upgrade the pedals and buy a gear shifter then you can move up to the TX servo base and optional wheels at a later date.

I've had the thrust master T300 Ferrari GTE for a while now and been very happy with it.... pedals are pretty poor, but they all are at this price range. Wheel itself is good imo and you always have option to upgrade to fancier pedals later on if you so wish.

Could always try to pick up a used on on ebay if it looks to be in good nick. Few around last time I looked.... alternatively If there is no rush just wait for January, can bet there will be some sales going on.

I think I might have been blindsided by Assetto a little. The helmet cam is simply immense, adds a real depth to VR racing id not experienced before. I find it odd that nobody had mentioned it as a real strength of the game. As much as I prefer the racing in Assetto, the helmet cam changes that perspective quite a bit.

Bit yanked I missed it in the midweek at the cheaper price, hopefully it shows in the summer sale.

A bit awkward to get online races though. The Assetto servers are far more friendly, servers stay populated when the race is done so you don't end up with a dead server. Then there's no mid race join, which on face value is a good thing.. but most of the time I was looking to join empty servers hoping that people would join.

That said I did a bumper to bumper sprint round Monza in a 488, and while I'm not totally convinced of the physics, the metrics of the cars at that distance really made assetto look small in comparison.
