Project: Need your thoughts/ideas

What size is that case Mish? Once again im sure you have posted further up, but Im to lazy to read it :)

It looks lovely and big, but that could be an illusion from the images?

I've got an antec 900, but I would love a really big case thinking of it now, more space to tidy cables... and more room for good airflow! That case, from the pics, looks perfect!

Can you get measurements? I'm really interested in knowing actually? Its looking great so far, and melbourne's suggestion for the fans is spot on, they would look sweet inside there!

There again, you could buy some cheapo sucker fans and spray them I suppose?

I'll get you the measurements when I go back home - I'm away for the weekend. Its actually very similar in width to my Akasa Zen case (on the last image the zen is in background), but it is much bigger in depth and height. I can't way to get my stuff in there, The quality of the steel is very good and its very quiet from what I can remember when I used to use it. If you want to do a similar project I would suggest going to you're local computer store and asking if they have any old cases knocking about, there are also some on a popular auction site and of course the MM on here is another option.

I'm going to the big warehouse today for some sprays, does anyone know what exactly I need to protect the paint but still maintain the same finish (satin) ?

Love the case, looks well pro.

Try to get a clear lacquer from the same family of paints that you used. It will ideally need to be based on the same varnish (usually cellulose or acrylic)

Make sure it the same type otherwise you can get resin clash and reticulation (horrible orange peel type effect).

Best bet is to buy the same make and brand to be sure - it was car paint wasn't it? If so, it will have a clear lacquer in the range for sure.

/edit, just had a re-read of the thread, you used a satin finish, most clear lacquers will be high gloss (who wants a dull car?) Strange how you could get a satin paint from halfords. I would still try them first and see what they got. You never know, they might have a satin lacquer. :D

Hi there,

Thanks for the advice. Well I have been to another place instead of the warehouse today, I went to B&Q. I was advised by them to purchase the following: Plasti-kote Polyurethane Varnish - Clear Satin

I hope this stuff works, I will test when I get home on a small piece of metal, if it isn't I'm going to take it straight back.

I use a standard clear lacquer from Halford when I do spray work on metal. Works a treat. Have a look at that if that Varnish doesnt work.

How long do you leave it to properly dry? The instructions on here are exactly the same as the paint sprays. I have applied 3 coats!

Hi Mish,

When i've painted in the past i tended to leave an hour or two between coats (with both the paint and the varnish layers) and then finally leave it to harden over a few days. In my experience (very limited ;) ) it was only fully tough after a couple of weeks.

You got any more pics by the way! :)

Hi there gt,

Thanks for the info. I have applied 3 coats of varnish today, giving half hour between coats. It will need another coat tomorrow. Just put all the panels together and put in the shed - must say it looks very good compared to when it was beige (stock). All that needs doing is that final layer and then I can move the bits in this case into the new modded one. It will more than likely be next week as I'm working and away for weekend again. I will take some snappies for you tomorrow :)

Looking good!

Is the top fan less bright because its on a lower voltage? Have you thought about modding the fans so they have a seperate power supply and stay the same brightness all the time? Its not too tricky provinding you can get your hands on some spare molex conectors.

PK!

Thanks, the bottom one is my own modification, the top fan is the Sycthe Kama Bay. The reason this is dim compared to the other fan below is because there is a dust filter obscuring the LED's and also the diameter of the mesh is different, going to take out the dust filter. It should look far better without it. The Noctua only just about fits the width of the chassis, its vert tight!

Man i forgot you used this colour scheme!

I got my server case yesterday! £4.95 from the bay, the guy drove it to my house from london which must have cost him £30 in fuel. I dont understand some people.

Cleaned it up and drilled out some rivets to remove the top panel, gonna work on sanding and spraying soon! Was gonna do Black outside and White inside. I feel like a cheap fraudster now!

Mish/Anyone Can you email me with info on where i can find mesh and other modding materials? :) thanks!

Project looks ace mish. Gonna light it up inside?

The black/white colour scheme is a great one, I'm very pleased with how mine has turned out. I would definately recommend doing it. I have popped you an email.

Not going to light up the insides, but may do some other time and do a perspex window. All the best with the project :)

All done, 56K warning!

Took me a while to figure out how to install the motherboard tray, it was quite a challenge to install it with the hardware on so I decided to install the tray then the hardware

Spent a good few hours sorting out the cabling for maximum airflow and neatness
