OMG DISASTER!!!!
Well, that was an interesting afternoon..........
I was driving the car to work, it was all going fine, temps were good, pressures were good, car was running fine when suddenly about 100yds from my work cars started flashing me, then a second later smoke started pouring out from the heater vents, then the bonnet........
I pulled over and opened the bonnet to be comfronted by loads of smoke and flames
As I got on the phone to the fire brigade a passer by had the quick thinking to run into my workplace and grab a fire extingusher, he put the fire out before it spread too far. This is how the engine looked after it had been put out:
I had a bit of a dig, and it turns out the culprit was the turbo oil feed line. The hose had come right out of the fitting, sprayed oil all over the hot exhaust manifold and downpipe and ignited. I can only assume that it was shoddy workmanship on the hose, maybe it wasn't crimped properly. It actually looks like it pulled out, but I left plenty of slack for engine movement so I don't think that was the reason. It appeares that it just blew out of the fitting under pressure...
The hose:
The fitting it seperated itself from
I cleaned the worst of the oil and crap off from everything and looked for damage, thankfully I appear to have been damn lucky. The only damage is:
Boost controller knob:
Injector wires charred:
Breather hoses:
Vac pipe charred:
Laquer on bonnet stained yellow:
All easily fixed. I have done the wires and hoses already, and bonnet needs to be relaquered anyway so that's not a massive issue. I just need to find a Goodridge/Aeroquip/JIC fitting for the oil line tomorrow morning, I think Merlin Motorsports at Combe do them, so if that goes OK the car might make it to Japfest yet............
