Prometheus 2 aka Alien: Paradise Lost

It's just one of those things where you have to accept that it's what they had to work with at the time, and that stuff looked futuristic back then.

ED: If it helps, maybe look at it as the Nostromo was just a crappy mining ship, the Sulaco was a functional military vessel and the Prometheus was a no expense spared, fancy pants last voyage for a trillionaire.

The first one was utterly terrible and RS should be ashamed of it. In fact, some moments were so bad one has to wonder how they made it into such an expensive film.

The worst parts of prometheus.

1) Mapping engineer gets lost.
2) Engineers decide to sleep next to alien snakes.
3) Captain and woman have sex while engineers are lost on alien spaceship/planet
4) Theron unable to escape falling space ship.
5) Woman has alien removed from stomach and runs marathon afterwards.

How can Prometheus have been set in the same Alien world at all. The technology shown was totally different to the other films which were set after it.

If you are going to do a prequel then rule number 1 is get the continuity correct.

The other aliens films were largely set in places where the money wouldn't have been spent on "best" tech or nice looking tech, but the best value for money or utilitarian technology that did the job.
From memory it's mentioned in Alien that the ship needed an overhaul/had a backlog of problems that needed fixed which would suggest it was an old ship (rather like a tramp steamer), also the company wasn't going to send a brand new ship on a mission that could result in it's loss (not only for cost reasons, than it's harder to explain what it was doing there).

The tech in Aliens was better cared for but again utilitarian and varied depending on if it was Earth Station (relatively nice, clean, modern), the Marine ship (clean but very utilitarian), or the ground base (very utilitarian).

Whilst the ship in Promethious was a brand new(?) ship equipped with state of the art technology such as the auto doc as used by the head of the company.

You even see the same sort of thing with the space suits, the ones on the Nostromo were obviously well worn, older design that were intended to be worn by people on a daily basis doing dirty/possibly dangerous work (such as maintenance in space), whilst the ones on the Promethium where more advanced/newer and intended for use by the likes of Scientists (as fitted the ship being an exploration one, rather than a basically a space truck).

The extended universe books do a bit of playing around with the background of the Human factions and expands on the idea (as shown in the films) that the Company is basically only giving out the good tech where it's needed and saving every penny it can at the expense of people's lives on the front line.
For example one of the books set a fairly long time after Aliens* mentions that they had one of the "new" autodoc units on a mining ship, not because the company cared for the miners, but because it was cheaper and led to less downtime (so more profit), whilst the one in Promethium was (from memory) mentioned as being a very expensive item and I think as a prototype or one of only a handful made.

Also from what I remember of the film and the books, there is a strong suggestion that the Engineers may have been fighting another alien race, or been involved in some form of civil war (hence the proto Aliens as a weapon).

The Alien books "Out of the Shadows", "Sea of Sorrows" and "River of pain" are pretty good reads and tie into the various gaps between the films, from memory "Out of the shadows" is set between Alien and Aliens, "Sea of Sorrows" is set just before Aliens on LV-426 (and expands on the bits shown in the Directors cut of Aliens).

*It features Ripley's Great Grandson I think.

I spent neart 45 minutes typing out (whilst doing other things) something you posted in about 5 lines whilst I was typing .:p :)

Good try, you almost convinced yourself. :p

There are a number of what we know would be low cost tech items in Prometheus that to say the characters in the future films would not have access to is just plain silly.

I think when you read around it the story really comes into its own a da th is a very clever story and does some real justice to the original films.

However the fact I had to spend an hour reading up yo actually understand what the hell the film was trying to convey speaks volumes about the quality of the script and direction that a great idea translated into a largely confusing abortion on screen.

I'm hoping the series improves. I don't think it was a s bad as everyone made out. And the whole it was a prequel then it was set in a similar but different universe put people off. But there was a lot of unneeded silly in it. At least run to the side of the falling ship, all though I don't know why that was needed at all.

Actually thought the basis of the idea could make a good story.

Good video about Prometheus:

It's worth getting hold of the deleted scenes, but this video goes to some way to explaining why Prometheus is only a good movie when considered on it's own, away from the Alien Quadrilogy. As much as people say it was crap, I really enjoyed Prometheus.

I'm just disappointed that it's pushed Blomkamp's Alien film back for a while.

Same.

I read something last night that said that Scott wants to add possibly 3 more films to the 'Prometheus' franchise.

This site also suggested that some people are worried that this might put Blomkamp's film in jeopardy. Not entirely sure why though, seeing as Alien 5 is set after Aliens, so has no bearing at all on what Scott is working on. That's assuming though, that Prometheus 2 and any follow up films are set before Alien. It's possible though, that Scott could have plans to continue these films featuring the 'engineers' after Alien is set and possibly it's sequels as well. If so, makes sense why some people fear that Blomkamp's film might get abandoned.

I want to see what Blomkamp will do with Alien, so if that gets dumped because Scott wants to put out more Prometheus films, then they had better be good.

What kind of worries me though, is that Scott has a habit of putting out a great film once in a blue moon. Anything else in between is largely average. He's just made The Martian, which has been very well received. If he continues that trend then Prometheus 2 and sequels are going to be poor. :(
