PS4. Again!

Indeed, out of all the next gen of consoles the PS4 has far the easiest route to market.

I cant wait to see what Sony do to **** up such a relatively simple hardware launch - it all hinges on the launch games for them, its only Nintendo that could bring something different to their last console to market...

ps3ud0

Seen a few people say that. I really really hope they won't make any drastic changes to the controller.

Agreed, Nothing too major please.

As for what GPU will go in, I cant remember the specifics, but the Cell was originally intended to offload a lot of GPU processing. Unfortunately it was borked and we ended up with a last minute GPU, So this time around if its not, The Cell will probably function right in conjunction with a GPU

Thats a lot of GPU....

Ill stick to my previous comments.

Ps3 backward compatible? Unless the PS4 retains the Cell technology, which it is unlikely to do, then IMO PS3 support is unlikely. The necessary power and software required to emulate it would be pretty heavy.

Evidence: Ps3 doesnt support PS2 games. The 60gb did but had the 'emotion engine' built into the hardware. Once this was removed, Disc based PS2 games on future 'Slim' models was non existent.

Given how pretty much anyone who entertained the cell has dropped it, and that developers complain at the complexity and overall power issues of having so many smaller SPU's etc, i doubt the PS4 will be cell based.

The PAL systems didn't have the EE in hardware and emulated PS2 software just fine.

Also of course it's going to use the CELL cpu, just a faster version. The developers are also getting to grips with CELL so by the time PS4 is released it'll be a non issue.

So i can play my PS2 discs in a slim 120/160/320?

I dont think it is as certain as you make it out to be. The word that i have read is multi core CPU but not necessarily CELL.

No, the fat PAL 60's didn't have the hardware for the EE but did it via software emulation.

So what was it that made the change to break that software emulation that stops me from using PS2 on my slim?

My thought is that Ps4 =/ Cell therefore backward compatability is unlikely.

These are all early day complaints. SDK's and general developer abilities have made most these complaints moot.

I cant imagine they'll drop it atall. They've perfected it and made it more efficient, now they need to advance it and move it into their next console. and this time Dev teams wont be blind sided by OMGZNEWTECHHULPICANTCODE4DIS.

Edit: I also hope that Ram is increased siginificantly to atleast 4GB from the current 512MB.

I very very much doubt that you'll see any more than 2gb of system RAM on the next generation of consoles. You need 4 ish on a PC because the OS is hogging so much but a consoles OS uses like 60mb. In addition the console memory is xdr ram instead of much slower traditional ram which mean you again don't need as much of it.

the low amount of ram is something the devs have complained about this gen but considering that the next gen is still going to be aiming for a maximum of 1080p its ram requirements really shouldn't need to increase as much as they did from PS2 - PS3 which was going form SD to HD.

I've also heard that having a Cell in the next machine isn't required to emulate PS3 games because of the way it works or something. The same can't be said of the PS2 because of the Graphics Synthesiser.

That the PS3 can't emulate the PS2 without it is more a testament to the backward ass way it did stuff.

Whatever it is it won't be as revolutionary as the PS3 was in terms of tech. They'll not change the disk format which cost them so much. At most they'll put in BDXL drives instead of the current ones but since few devs are even using a whole 25gb it's not likely they are going to need 75 or 100 next time out.

Also they don't want to bleed money like they did with the PS3. It'll quite possibly still make a loss at launch but i doubt it'll be even half of what the PS3 was doing.

I'm looking forward to it, and I expect to see something from both Microsoft and Sony about it at E3 '12 for a release sometime in '13. Nintendo is kind of forcing thier hand a little by jumping early but they have no choice since Wii sales have dropped off a cliff to the point that the PS2 is still going to be selling when the Wii is gone.

I think Sony is too worried about security to allow any kind of emulation backwards compatibility, incase there is some kind of exploit. It will be hardware or nothing.

I think they will release before the next-gen Xbox. A lot of Microsoft's success was getting the 360 to market before the PS3 (imo( and Sony won't let that happen a second time.

A cheaper release price - compared to the PS3's release price.

They will definitely be sticking with Blu-ray.

And I would probably put money on them sticking with Cell technology.

Frankly they ruined the PS3 for me with the lack of backwards compatability (post 60gb consoles) and the hamfisted launch/shortages/pricing. They'll have to do something very special for me to be interested in this.

They'll swap to DDR3 RAM, go to a lower manufacturing process (<32nm), and hopefully they'll go solid state for the storage.

I've never had a problem with the controller, but I shudder to think they actually thought the boomerrang was a good idea :/
