PS4. Again!

They would remove costs and incentivise customers to buy. Economies of scale 101 bro

Not sure about that myself, I just can't see Sony producing a high-spec, well-equipped console again considering how slow PS3 sales were at the start, and the loss they were making on each one sold. Shame really.

Seen a few people say that. I really really hope they won't make any drastic changes to the controller.

Just make it the same as the 360 controller but with the PS3 d-pad :p
After having a PS1 & PS2 and using the control pads for them I can honestly say the 360 is much better. Shame the d-pad is crap really!

The people talking about the PS4 having SSD must be smoking something - considering the timeline Sony must already be close to finalising the spec and theres not a chance in hell theyll stick out their neck and assume around launch time that SSDs (in bulk) are going to be sufficiently cheap enough at the sizes required to be a cost-effective USP. Look at RAM pricing when the PS3 was at a similar stage and consider why they didnt put more than 512MB in...

And unless they rewrite the OS to address the SSD more efficiency the end user isnt going to get a dramatic improvement anyway. Im sorry but theres zero chance that theyll go down that road - quantity is far more important especially considering the movement to digital distribution/publishing both Sony and MS have setup...

Id be amazed if Sony dont produce a console thats at a price point thats near zero cost to them - they have already absorbed the brunt of the tech cost when they moved to PS3...

i dont think they will have finalised the spec until they see what xbox has up their sleeve, im assuming the new xbox will be launched first.

I be very surprised if the storage medium hasnt been wrapped up - its not like next xbox will have anything revolutionary in that department. If the rumours are true that some devs have the new Xbox, do you think Sony havent had a chance to look at it by now?

It'd be awesome if instead of a list of trophies you had a proper trophy room which you could walk around and compare friends trophies to yours. They could just use Playstation Home or something like that. I actually think Playstation Home is a great idea, it's just not implemented very well, seems really clunky to me. If they could polish that experience it could become something better than what it currently is.

I feel sorry for Arsenal fans sometimes. Support a proper team and maybe you can walk through the trophy room for real?

You cant just change the hardware spec at the last minute like that and you know sure as hell that Sony don't want to let Microsoft get a massive head start again. Assuming it takes 2 years to develop a game for it and if we are going to see the next gen machines say xmas 2013 games are probably either in the early stages of development or are on the drawing board.

Sony pushed the limits last time, they gave a bunch of very clever men a blank cheque and simply said "give us something amazing". They did, it nearly bankrupted the entire company to develop and then sell the thing and pretty much the entire mountain of cash they made on the PS2 was lost because of the PS3.

The PS3 would have launched much closer to the 360 had they not been using Blu-Ray as shortages of diodes and an agonising wait on final blu-ray spec forced them to wait. This time out I fully expect it to be out within 6 months of the NextBox.

Whatever it is will still be powerful, probably more powerful than whatever Microsoft choose to do, but it won't be a Crazy Ken design and so it hopefully won't let them bleed money or release so late. It won't be as revolutionary but also it shouldn't be anywhere near as expensive because they saw how dangerous that was.

And I strongly doubt there will be an SSD option at launch. Probably ever. While the hardcore might see the benefits of a 120gb SSD over a 500gb HDD, Sony and Microsoft have to cater to the masses. The masses like numbers and the bigger they are the better. Its the same with with cameras, people will go any buy the 14MP camera over the 10MP camera. Or scoff at the dude who "only" has a 10MP DSLR while they have a 16MP P&S. Tech people know that bigger numbers doesn't always mean better but the other 98% of people who are buying consoles don't give a crap. In addition, at the moment we have what 320gb PS3s being sold? lets assume that they up that to 500gb next year at some point to contiinue the trend of adding value by making numbers bigger. When the PS4 comes out average Joe is going to look at the box and go "only 120/250gb? but my PS360 has more than that". How many times has someone said to you that their computer is running slow but that they have loads of space left. Average Joe simply has no idea and it'll be like that for a long time yet.

People want to see value, value = numbers on the box.

The fear is that after seeing Microsoft making so much money from making people buy overpriced HDDs from them that Sony may do the same.

I thought they already did that

Swear I saw vids of that when they first announced trophies.

Surely the PS3 has more than enough life left in it?

4-5 years, easily?

the ps2 is still going so i doubt they will drop support for it for a long time yet, if there is true backward compatibility it would be more viable for a small studio to work on a ps3 game (with a cheaper licence like on the ps2) which also works on the ps4 in compatibility i would have thought
But then that said why get a relatively expensive licence like that when you can simply stick your games on PSN for a fraction of the cost, hmmmz

I'd be happy for a 2013 release. I Dont know why. But it gives us a year and a half of PS3 being the main platform, And then when PS4 does hit. With PS3 getting continuing support it means people can migrate gradually. Also if they keep backwards compatibility, which I believe they will, as I still think Cell will be at the centre of the new console, People will probably begin trading old PS3 Consoles in for new PS4s.

very much doubt the ps4 will be the same jump as the previous 3 consoles going by whats been said. Have a feeling microsoft will continue to push on and dominate the console scene. Sony have a lot of issues at the moment in all divisions.

...You saying PS3 isnt a success? I mean it made losses in the beginning, I wasnt aware it still was?

Its not making any losses at the moment, 5 qtrs profit for that division even though its not quite the same division as it was at the launch of the PS3.
I would say an imporved cell, maybe 2?, a decent GFX card and around 2GB Ram would be fine and not to much more than the current PS3 to manufacture.

Well, they sold ~50m consoles worldwide, but that's nothing compared to the ~80m Wii consoles (and of course Sony's own PS2). They've gone from clear market leaders to last by a few million consoles.

I'm sure turning a profit on the PS3 is regarded as a success, but it's a few miles off what they anticipated I'm sure.

/edit: am I the only person who doesn't particularly care what goes inside the PS3? As long as it maintains current features, improves on PSN and the controller and doesn't lag behind spec wise (and therefore 3rd party support?), I'm not bothered if that's achieved via 2 Cells CPUs, SSD HDDs or otherwise.
