Same for me too. In dead silence I can hear a low pitch hum. I have heard it ramp up a little on Cold War but other than that pretty quiet. My Pro used to sound like it was taking off.
 
I have contacted shopto to see what to do next..... I am not sure if it is better to deal with Sony or ShopTo to get a replacement?
 
Mine definitely gets louder when in game, and if I manually close the game from the switcher the fan slows down - expected tbh, there's still a fan in there, it's not a passive system.

The lowest volume on my headphones means I can't hear it, so not an issue. If I was to put it further away or not at head height I'd not be able to hear it either.

I dont wear headphones and mine is audible on the floor with no games running at 8foot away. My mate sits closer and is not audible at all
 
Mine is silent. I mean I’ve only played Astro for a few hours. But couldn’t hear it at all.

I’ll see what it’s like running more intensive games tomorrow. (Downloads are queued up)
 
Mine definitely isn't silent, it isn't loud like PS4 but I can hear a noise coming from the system. I don't think mine is coil whine though.

I doubt sending back is an option at the moment. Might wait for stock to become a bit better before going for a warranty repair / replacement.
 
Sony aren't afraid to take inspiration from competitors if it can improve the product, I'm sure that any newer PS5 versions will have a stronger focus on quieter operation, quite likely like the Xbox design with a huge slower running fan right next to a vent grille being the best option.
 
Mine is quiet when playing, yes I can hear it but it's not what I'd call loud. Don't worry to much about what others say, there are many factors like background noise, age and of course the biggest thing is that some people who say theirs are 'whisper quiet' were also claiming their PS4 Pro's were too :D
 
My digital edition has coil whine but it's nowhere near as bad as my PS4 Pro. The fan isn't silent either, but it isn't loud enough to be annoying like the PS4. I don't think mine is louder than it's supposed to be, I think the people claiming theirs are silent have less sensitive hearing or have higher background noise.
