Queen Elizabeth II has passed away - keep posts civil and respectful

Watching some of the lying in state on TV and its interesting how many people are stopping to watch and bow at the coffin - I thought the idea was just to keep walking slowly past. Will slow the queue down a bit if this carries on...

Seems to be a copied behaviour particularly in the right hand file where people are stopping in exactly the same spot, bowing one by one to the coffin and then the next person taking their place to do exactly the same thing...
I noticed that when I put it on for a couple of minutes yesterday just out of interest. A lot of people just seemed to look quite uncomfortable and weren't quite sure what to do with themselves so followed the person in front.

Yeah it's definately changed this morning. Last night most people were walking past, maybe the odd quick bow, but nothing like it is now. Like you say, it's become a carbon copy of wait, walk to spot, bow.

You just don't get it

No I don't - nor do millions of others. But apparently if you don't get it you're somehow inferior or a bad person. I do think whilst this is sad, I feel the death and burial of Olivia Pratt-Korbel which is tomorrow is sadder and for me than the death of the Queen. I don't mean that with any disrespect to the queen, 96 years and 70 years on the throne is epic and undoubtedly will not be repeated for long time if ever - but let's just be rational about it....

I do appreciate for some it's the end of an "era" but it was on the cards.

Some people really don’t get it.

If people want to queue and pay their respects, why is that considered strange? The Queen was widely admired by the majority of the country. She has been a constant for many people in a lifetime of change. It’s really not difficult to understand, it’s a significant part of the history of our country.

These comments about how weird people are for caring just come across as puerile.

I don't think you're inferior or bad but you said people queuing had lost the plot in a thread mourning the Queen which says to be respectful in the title, if that was you who wrote the comment. Your comment, or whoever I quoted, was light compared to others in this thread but if you don't agree with what's going on then start another thread

This has happened for the last 4 monarchs who died in role according to the Today programme on Radio4 this morning. People queuing to mourn the monarch is normal it just hasn't happened in a long time.

I don't recognise what you're saying.

The only people I've seen falling into the inferior and bad person category are the ones actively trying to sabotage/hijack/otherwise strongly disrespect the event, which when it comes right down to it, is a huge number of people paying respects to a coffin.

But that's a long way from not getting it.

It must be troubling for republicans to witness this huge level of participation and support at grass roots level in and for the truly spectacular pageantry this historic occasion generates.

And then on Monday the Queen's funeral occurs that will have a global audience in the billions, and participation by a plethora of world leaders, and dignitaries. It's only natural they try and prop one another up faced with this overwhelming support for, and interest in our monarchy, and the wall to wall world media coverage an event such as this in its history creates.

Right shifting political events in the EU members, Sweden and Denmark are probably causing them further angst so I think it best we cut them some slack if they feel overwhelmed, as long as they remain polite and discrete in their comments, as protocol and the forum rules demand. It will be all but over soon.

plus the population is 17 million more than when King George died. 29% increase in population. More people to mourn and a good chunk of that population have had the Queen as a constant.

A friend on FB said that the Queen thought thank goodness that buffoon, national embarrassment, lacking a comb and bumbling idiot Boris is no longer PM. Queen started to slip away.

Can you imagine what Boris would have done if he’s still PM when the Queen died?
She hung on just long enough to ensure he wouldn't have to speak at her funeral :D

This is why I'm not being disrespectful. I do understand that for many she was what has been said many times "the nation's grandmother" and it's sweet. And it is sad, just like any death I'm not denying that. It's just the saturation of it that I find a little bit excessive. I do think it's a shame, I really do, and it is admirable to queue for 10hrs for someone, I just find it hard to comprehend the need to do it. However, I hold no offensive thoughts or would consider those people stupid or daft - it's their time to do as they please. If this is their way of somehow bonding with the royal family or if she had had an impact of their lives then of course I understand that. However, it just seems to have turned into a bit of a spectacle rather than it being something more meaningful, at least from the frenzy of the press.

I don't disagree with what's going on - I've stated my points above replying to Robbo. I'm just regarding it with a little bit of lack of understanding as I mentioned above.

This is a discussion forum and whilst I think hate speech during the queen at this time is not acceptable, discussing the events from different perspectives is important, echo chambers and group think aren't good! :)

I think for a lot of people its a parasocial relationship.

The Queen being the Monarch as always been a constant in peoples reality. So when a part of their reality ends it changes some people. It seems to have made some emotional who never thought they would be, including many Americans watching on.

It's hard to believe that a person of 70 years old today would have just been born when Elizabeth became Queen.

For many its a link broken to the past, the world war 2 era.

I think you have a wider point there - the press are just awful in general!
