Queen Elizabeth II has passed away - keep posts civil and respectful

I struggle to believe that number given, 400 million people sure but literally half the planet not a chance

I think that is "have seen clips of" rather than watched it live. Since basically everywhere is showing it as part of their news, I would assume that basically everyone in the world who watches news has seen it. For which, 4bn seems reasonable.

Unless someone proves otherwise I’m inclined to believe sky news

I suppose it's still too early to say what the figures are.

But if you combine all the TV channels and the internet, the figures are going to be very high. Hard to say what they will be though.

It would be in line with how they measure free to air broadcasts I guess. It relates to advertising so they'll include people in a street walking past a public screening, those who see a clip on the news etc.

Queen Camilla

Consort wife of the King, not Queen as such. Not that I care that much but its likely 2 different titles and she isnt in any line of sucession. Go back 500 years who knows what could happen but its William then George now, dont think any of us see the ones after that.

If we guess that they will all live to 90, as an estimate, William would come to the throne in ~2039 and would then leave the throne in ~2072. In reality it may be a few years later than that.

I imagine most of us won't even see George take up the crown. Kind of sobering to think that William will outlive me. I'd love to think he won't but he has access to world-class medical care.

what conditions are required to have both a king and queen at the same time?

William III and Mary II ruled jointly from 1689, when the “Glorious Revolution” deposed the Catholic James II and placed his Protestant daughter Mary and her husband William III of Orange on the throne, to Mary’s death in 1693. After his wife’s death, William ruled alone until his death in 1702.

When Philip II of Spain married Mary I of England in 1554, he was recognized as co-ruler of England. At the time of their marriage,he was not yet King of Spain but heir to the throne. In 1556, however, he succeeded to the throne of Spain. Mary was the first regnant queen of England and there was no precedent for the role of the spouse of a reigning queen. Philip was granted joint authority but he was often absent from England in order to attend to the affairs of his own kingdom. Mary’s policies at times opposed Spanish interests particularly toward the end of her life. When Mary died in 1558, Philip sought to maintain his role in English government as King by trying to marry her successor Elizabeth I, but she would not marry him and so he lost his title.

It should be noted that the famed royal couple Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castille ruled their respective kingdoms separately though generally they acted in partnership.

With thanks to Martin Olesh whose answer on another forum I have shamelessly plagiarised :)

I'm surprised nobody brings up that its only the female partner of the King who gets a title with Queen in it.

I've not seen anyone question why Prince Philip wasn't King consort.

Obviously sexist ;)
