Queen Elizabeth II has passed away - keep posts civil and respectful

As an evolutionary monarch she should have abdicated years back and recognised her son could have had a more participative role in UK life,
would have thought that would give her pleasure,
her mother might have been just a consort to the King, but she had a stress free retirement.

Can we stop with the silly insults, politics and baiting and get the thread somewhat back on track or do we have to start baning people from yet another thread.

It's disappointing and unfortunately very very typical that the same handful of people do it every time.

Ok, no more politics or bickering I promise

The Queen has been a remarkable leader / figurehead for the country over her lifetime. I hope it won't be any time soon but when she does go I will certainly be upset, as will many others. She is a powerful national symbol as well as a respected old woman who has lived through a lot.

Edit: personal stance on monarchy spoilered to avoid contributing to thread derailment :p
Personally I do theoretically disagree with hereditary positions like the monarchy having any place in public life, but at the same time in 'the real world' I think the monarchy actually does a fair bit of good, being a historic institution has some value all of its own, and I prefer the system we have now to an elected head of state (who, based on the general state of politics would be far more divisive, far less competent, and no more accountable). That is to some extent dependent on how the monarch approaches their role, and if we had had 70 years of a 'bad' monarch rather than a 'good' one then I and many others would probably feel differently. That's always how it has been though (see: 'Revolution'), and given the system is currently working without any major problems I'm still in favour of monarchy, and the Queen.

Not sure what to make of her stepping back from public appearances at the moment. Could be because she is seriously ill and the press releases are just trying to avoid unproductive panic. Could also be that she really is just resting after some minor illness, and due to her old age she just has less energy than she used to. She has gradually been handing over more and more tasks to other members of the royal family as age starts to take its toll (and she acknowledges the need to prepare her heirs for taking on her full role themselves one day), and this could simply be a continuation of that.

She's 95. Reports are saying she wants to save her energy for Remembrance Day its several hours standing in typically cold and rain.

I'm not a royalist. In fact I'm really not a fan of the royals at all. But I do agree with this. I think her sense of duty has been great over her lifetime. Once she passes it will be an end of an era because I really don't see her children in the same light.

She's probably fine but what irks is me is the Royal Family PR team always using the term 'good spirits' - e.g Prince Philip, despite him being one foot in the grave, or maybe two feet.

I have to agree; I'm no fan of the Royals but the Queen (and Phillip) have been incredible given her length of service and the sheer change not just in the UK but globally since she became Queen.
I honestly couldn't give a stuff about the rest of them at all though; I do think the demise of the Queen will prompt more of a debate about the future of the monarchy.

Yep, got to agree with this sentiment.

I agree but it is a barometer that nobody can stand up against. She has almost 70 years on the throne!

always take it as a hommage to Monty Pythons life of Brian -
all the Cop speeches were pretty derivative, she was bet off out of it,
but it would have been interesting to see her expression (& Macrons?) with Boris James Bond reference, or Welby saying Boris could be cursed/tried.

Great to see, a drive around one's own estate is hardly taxing, it's not like trying to get from London to Glasgow in one of those ridiculous battery powered cars... ;)
