Queen Elizabeth II has passed away - keep posts civil and respectful

To me, she was similar to Diana, but not as bold, however that is understandable, she was a positive impact to humankind and I hope that our monarchy promotes the values protruded by the likes of Queen Elizabeth II and Priencess Diana, who will always be the just above all else.

His speech was surprising circumspect and forward looking - he didn't need to expose anecdotes about her life, but concentrated on how he would try and live up to her example,
felt some sympathy for him taking up the role.
Stopping and speaking to the crowds a very magnanimous/human response.

It was in contrast with HofP, with this one upmanship for anecdotes involving the Queen - less is more, I think the MP's could show more self-discipline - maybe turn off the cameras.

( was fascinating that (prior to queen) the home secretary used to be present for birth of heirs; the Queen apparently revoked need for courtiers to back away from her, too. )

We have had a very competent head if state for seventy years with no scandals about elections, no party political shenanigans in fact no party machinery involved at all.
Every government leader in that time has positive recollections about their dealings with the monarchy.
It has obviously evolved over the jet age, the space age and now the digital age but it has evolved slowly and carefully without upsetting the constitutional wheelbarrow.
Critics and republicans will say we want a president who is elected by the people every four or so years. I say why, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Liz you've played a blinder and we will miss you and hope that your son and subsequent heirs are half as good as you were. If so we are fixed for the next millenia. Good night.

I feel quite emotional about this I wasn't expecting that. Macron gave a nice tribute I thought: "To you she was your queen, to us she was the queen". Its been quite astonishing how much worldwide reaction there has been its been blanket news coverage not just here on BBC and itv news but CNN and even Al Jazeera and just about everywhere else, quite astonishing.

I’m in Spain. After flicking through the channels of the tv, I noticed that they refer to Elizabeth II as Isabel II and Charles III as Carlos III.

Yet we refer to Spain’s previous king as Juan Carlos, not John Charles and the current king as Filipe, not Philip.

Does anyone know why?

The BBC in particular prefers to use original pronunciations rather than anglicised versions, presumably the spanish don't have that tradition?

I'm another one who's had her as my Boss for 22 years now, but I'm not a royalist or monarchist and never had any liking for the royals, but even to me it feels strange not having her there. Hearing the word 'King' over and over feels alien, like a return to 'ye old times', as someone else mentioned above. So much has to change in my job, down to little things like the buttons on my uniform jacket and my beret badge as they feature the wrong crown - it'll take years to filter through I would imagine.

I didn't think I would have any feelings about it all until it actually happened and I proved myself wrong - very curious and a sad point in history.

I also feel more sad than I thought I would given I'm not a monarchist (although not a republican either, I'd prefer reforms). But I think this is because the Queen was uniquely able to earn respect and even affection from across the political and social spectrum, even amongst many with republican leanings. The qualities of duty, loyalty and probity which defined her life are rarely found in this day and age. She has always felt like "true north" to this country's moral compass and to lose her now when there's so much corruption and dishonesty in our politics and so much general instability is a sad and untimely blow.

Change will inevitably come. Huge affection for the Queen doesn't automatically translate as huge affection for the monarchy as an institution. I think Charles will make a good King and he already seems to understand some reforms are needed if the monarchy is to maintain sufficient relevance moving forwards in an increasingly unequal and fractured society. Not just here in the UK, but the wider Commonwealth too. But that's a discussion for another day. For now we pay our respects and remember a "life well lived".

I don't even remember writing the last post in here in June :p

Missed a look at all the newspapers yesterday, people must have been buying handfuls for souvenirs.

I learnt today that there will be changes all over the place now that Charles is King.
He will face left on stamps and coins etc.
Querns council will become Kings council, to name but two.

I am proud to say I took the Queen's shilling when much younger, she was a national treasure appreciated both here and abroad. Even Royal Mail called off strike action as a sign of respect, I was shocked when postie handed me my 1070 Ti yesterday, I wasn't expecting it until at least Saturday.
