I've cancelled the 256gb and ordered the 64gb with battery strap and case instead

The battery strap/case must have been popular as it’s not available for preorder on the oculus store! Surprising considering the price!

As I am not sure how easy it is to cancel at the oculus store I’ve preordered both strap variants via the rainforest so I can easily change my mind when reviews come out for them.. I was playing on the quest last week using a power bank in my pocket but the usb lead did get in the way a little so having it all built in to the strap sounds quite neat and possibly worth it.

I’ve stuck with the 256gb version but acknowledge that the 64gb is definitely enough and even if devs offer higher quality versions I doubt any game would get close to even 10gb, currently the largest is super hot which is around 5gb.

This from a review, Sorry but this is creepy as hell -

Facebook Venues' beta includes a notice that the app, at all times for all users, performs a "rolling recording" of everything you see, say, and do within VR, so that you can tap a button to upload that footage and report other users' behaviour, Even worse, if someone "near" you in
an official Facebook VR space blocks or reports a user, even if you're just minding your own business, your behaviour (including motions and speech) may be tracked by these same silent, invisible Facebook moderators. That data can be stored on Facebook's servers indefinitely without you being notified.

Ars technica is one of them not recommending it for a few reason, Personally I was excited until the whole Facebook requirement which I will never have as I deleted it some time ago.

Ars technica also got things straight up wrong. It comes across as an extremely biased review to me. For what i would have paid to get a base model quest secondhand, i can now get something with double the power, faster refresh and better screen...

Oculus are geniuses. They look like they're dropping support for PCVR in the next couple of years with a very Quest-centric FB Connect.

Yet I bet people will buy (for PCVR)

1. Oculus Quest 256GB 399
2. Oculus Quest headstrap 50 or the one with a battery pack 129
3. Oculus Quest headphones 30-50
4. Oculus Quest bag 50
5. Oculus Quest Link cable 70

Genius. Honestly... before you know it they are more than halfway to an Index and a HP reverb.

Some will I guess, but just the £299 base model for me and it only cost me £23 to upgrade which im very pleased about.

I will need a new GPU though.

What do you all think about the screen in the Quest 2 - believe it is LCD.

I had an original Rift and sold this to get a Rift S but really hated the black levels (and also had connectivity issues with PC), so returned this and bought a Quest. Really happy with the Quest, it's a great device.

I'd definately have to try one out first before I took the plunge, would be gutted if I didn't and ended up hating the milky black levels (if it's similar to the Rift S).

I have the original Rift with Touch controllers that they did for £399 a while back. I would like a newer headset and was set on the Reverb G2 until this was announced.

It's a fantastic price but I've read bad things about the link cable. I see the benefit of a standalone product but wouldn't want it to be at the detriment of the PCVR experience.

Compared to a CV1 Oculus Link is a perfectly acceptable experience. The level of detail is higher and SDE is reduced. Of course you miss the coverage of the external tracking and the image is a little soft due to the compression, plus currently it's only 72hz, but it is much better than the CV1 image. Facebook have also said there will be quality improvements in the compression coming later as well as 90hz.

The biggest advantage is true wireless PCVR via sideloaded Virtual Desktop, which if your wireless connection is good enough then it's an amazing experience. (Unfortunately I can only get a good wireless signal for mine right next to the router... which is next to the PC with no room to move around, so not really worth it for me).

Nearly all PC VR devices are now moving to LCD, mainly because of the subpixel arrangement which gives a much sharper image for the same number of pixels, so there's not much of a choice.

If the black levels are anything like the Index then it won't be too much of an issue, as they are definitely better than the Rift S. I've not seen any review complain about the black levels either.

I develop for the Oculus ecosystem (mainly Go, but transitioning to Quest now) and the Link system is great. If you have recent hardware and keep all the drivers up to date - you won't be disappointed. I would say go with the official Link cable though.

Interestingly, the elite strap with battery can’t be used with the link cable.

Does the link cable power the device as well as feed data? If so, then I guess there isn't much point in being able to use both. Just added expense creating the pass through.

If not, that's a bit poor.

Yay - uni have just ordered 5 - 4 for the lab and one for me - got a pro strap as well :-)

I actually really don't like having the trackers on my desk, I think they're ugly, so glad that both the Quest 2 and Reverb G2 remove the need for them.

I keep arguing with myself in both directions. PC power isn't an issue.

Reverb G2 seems to have the overall quality in picture and sound
Reverb G2 probably wins in comfort
Reverb G2 won't be linked to Facebook
Quest 2 has better controllers from what I can work out.
Quest 2 is white (my new PC build is going to be white)
Quest 2 has the untethered option...
Quest 2 is considerably cheaper
