Quest 3 owners etc

Got mine on Saturday. Just been messing about on various games with the meta+ trial.
Had a brief and unsuccessful try with airlink and followed a quick YT video (after failed airlink attempt) on improving quality etc.

I have a 4090 so wanted to get the most I could out of it but I only have NMS (Which took so long to load. I actually thought it had crashed but yeah no idea why it takes so long in VR mode ) to try it with currently, I assume those settings I tinkered with in debug don't effect it in 'native' mode?

I'll post some more detailed info about the steps I took with airlink in a bid to see whether I can get a decent connection out of it.

No Mans Sky is one of the worst games for graphics in VR - it's very blurry and performance is rubbish, even on a 4090 (It's really CPU heavy).

Graphically probably HL Alyx is the best looking and optimised. If you want a pretty tech demo, try Aircar. It's free and you get to fly over a blade runner style city, and it's really atmospheric.

Thanks for this, using on PC is like going from SD to HD. I do like the Q3 on the whole but VR is still very far away from what I want it to get to, or I just don't know about the other options. I think it's good value though for performance and convenience etc.
I do need to look into how I play games I already own in VR with mods, I think people have modded regular FO4 and Skyrim for example? Some games IO wish I could just use it for head tracking but continue to use my regular m+kb.

Funnily enough the latest patch for NMS really seems to have improved performance. I also find using Virtual Desktop works better than Airlink for NMS.

Skyrim VR + mods is an incredible experience. I've got nearly 300 hours in it. But it does take a lot of work to get a modlist installed. It's best to use the Wabbajack mod installer, but you'll also need a paid subscription to nexus mods to make installation more automated and quicker.

FO4 VR is also vastly improved by mods. But the modlists aren't brilliant for it and it's best to pick the mods you want.

Remember there's also mods of 2D games like HL, HL2, Doom3, Jedi Outcast and Academy, and quite a few others.

What games have you tried up to now?
Also try out uevr injector. It will inject vr into unreal engine games with varying degrees of success. There are people who release profiles for games to make them work with the injector better or to use 6dof control.
A few games that I have played that work really well:
Jedi survivor
Sackboy
Crash bandicoot (latest one)
Little nightmares 1+2
Lies of p

These are not my Meta games, or my PCVR type. They are PC flat pancake games that I had already and can be adapted to VR, with varying degrees of success. I have not played all of them, just placed them together in a folder....

I keep thinking about Alien Isolation...........but I keep making reasons as to why I should play something else, that is more of an acceptance of just how tense it can be...!

The Forest should be in another folder, it has its own VR support.

Even if some of your games aren't Unreal Engine or Unity based they can still be played is stereoscopic 3D using Reshade software. Opentrack head tracking software can also be used to pan/tilt your or the cameras view effectively using the gyros and accels in the headset, turning the 3D game into full VR.

Just native Quest ones that come with the sub (plus Batman), on PC just NMS and was messing about on the Steam home thingy where you can change environments. Briefly Elite Dangerous but it looked god awful, not sure why considering how good other stuff looks.

It's the whole 2d games patched stuff I need to look at, not heard of Reshade or the Ue injector thing previously. Just watching that video posted above first.

Thanks @ShiWarrior that video made a big difference indeed, especially on Red Matter 2 which I tried first (and is my current favourite game).

Guess I'll be tackling the injector mod things next :)

After that I might try get Steamlink working nicely over wireless but I suspect my Virgin Hub 4 will be the limiting factor despite how close I am to it (+ 1GB).

Not had an amazing experience with UEVR, as it's just a gigantic faff, plus the games I most want to play in VR for the feeling of being inside the game world generally don't work that well - Robocop for example. Performance can be awful, even with a 4090.

Hi Folks,

I was away at the weekend with some mates and had a go on a quest 2. Following the experience, I've decided I'm probably going to punt for a Quest 3. I hope you can help me with the following queries:

  1. I've got a 4070 and a 13700k - is this going to be enough to get a good experience?
  2. I've heard you need 6E Wifi to get the best experience when streaming VR from your PC? My PC is in my office at the other end of the house from my lounge (where i've got enough room to move around when in VR). If I upgrade to a Deco XE75 or similar, am I still likely to experience any issues?
  3. I still intent to use it sitting down for F1 23/24 and other "seated" VR experiences at my PC - if this ends up being my most likely use-case, should I consider the PS VR instead?
Many thanks in advance

hi there

1. 4070 is plenty good enough, i run a 3090 myself, Mr Cookie runs a 1070 i believe and running Automobilista 2 no problems

2. you don't "need" 6E, 5Gz is absolutely fine

3. no, stick with a Quest 3 (or Quest 3s)

hope that helps

Thanks for replying

I should add, my wifi is currently shocking (My PC is wired straight to the hub). If I upgrade my Wifi anyway (something i'm planning to do regardless), will it operate wirelessly on the same wifi network as long as i've got a decent connection (70mbps?) to the main router? I've seen that some people run a dedicated router from their PC to the headset as an alternative - happy to explore this as an option as well.

Running a dedicated router is the best option, but there are alternatives -

PC being hardwired is good. What is your hub at the moment? And where? If it does wifi 5, and where you're planning on playing, it's probably good enough. You'll need another solution for games at your PC, but if they're racing games, you might be able to just use a USB cable and not really notice it.

Haven't tried PSVR2, and it is meant to be very nice in terms of brightness and OLED, but Q3 lenses (not 3s) are special, and being able to use it wireless, and standalone, is really nice. You've just been sold by trying a q2, which was likely a standalone experience, there are a ton of solid games.#

EDIT - And don't forget to get a referral code off your mate, so you both get £23 free credit to spend on games. Like walkabout mini golf, that you can play every monday evening (well not every, we do other stuff sometimes) with a group of us!
