Mine arrived yesterday.
I went to check for dead pixels, but before launching a browser to point to an LCD Test website, I got hooked on the MR intro experience and then marvelled at how sharp it is! I didn't notice any dead/stuck pixels in general use, but will do my old favourite of using the browser to use an LCD test site that does the colours including white/black screens etc..
However, when I put my Quest 2 on whilst recharging the Quest 3, I was watching a youtube video and noticed a bloody blue stuck pixel!!!!!!!!!!! only really visible on a pure black screen, the grey home area makes it almost invisible, so will have to live with that since the Q2 was a reveal day pre-order!
Going Q3->Q2 and watching videos on Sky Worlds for example shows the extra clarity of the pancake lenses.. the Q2 is actually fairly decent in the sweet spot, but you really can tell the difference when just off the sweet spot, the Q2 gets blurry quickly, the Q3 is a degree better..
Since my son was dying to have a go, we did a few competitive rounds of the MR encounter, then played a couple of games for 10 mins, then I sat and watched a few movies to see if it's a better experience than the Q2 which it absolutely is, the battery died.. can't wait for the Elite Battery Strap to turn up (probably weeks since the mobile phone company dropped the ball on that).
Negatives
- Cameras could be better, slightly better res, slightly larger/less noisy sensors etc.
- battery life from in inbuilt battery should have been improved rather than seemingly a bit less than the Q2 and having a battery saving mode that lowers rendering resolution is not ideal!
- The IPD adjustment is a bit cheap feeling (although does work)
- Extra resolution in the home screen was not that obvious to the Q2 (which is already good), it's there, but the LCD panels are so close in black levels/saturation etc that it's not stand out obvious.
Positives
- The depth sensor is revolutionary, amazing job at scanning my room and play area perfectly.
- The MR is actually better than I thought.
- The colour pass through is a bit less than perfect, but at least you can read your phone (to a degree) without taking the headset off.. allowed me to activate various subscriptions on the phone without taking the headset off.
- Can't argue with the pancake lenses, makes watching videos on a screen that mimics my home cinema (where you have to move your eyes around a bit to see the entire screen) which is a 122" screen @ 7 ft distance a pleasure.. would almost be a good home cinema replacement..
- It's snappier than the Q2, which is surprising, that always felt snappy, until I did a back to back.
I'll do a proper pixel check tonight, and really I'm just awaiting the Elite Battery Strap, so might see if the BoBo one recommended comes out before that dispatches (Was in stock at some point, then went up to 27th October, now says "Awaiting confirmation from supplier")
