Quest 3 owners etc

MSFS is probably the most demanding sim out there. Are u using OpenXR Toolkit + VDXR? These may help. I have my Q3 refresh rate @ 120Hz with synchronous space warp on Automatic, if it can hit 60 fps it's smooth.

I'm using wired link.

I want to try wireless but there are two issues. 1. Battery life (no continual charging available if play wireless). 2. I need to buy a dedicated router for the pc to quest wireless link.

There doesn't seem to be much information out there about wireless Vs wired link comparisons but wired should really be better, theoretically (higher bandwidth, less latency).

About the router, does your current router do 5GHz? If so, is there any congestion on it i.e. other devices on it and/or neighbours also using a 5GHz network? If you have only your Quest 3 on 5GHz and other devices on 2.4GHz, and you're not seeing other 5GHz networks overlapping yours (I used wifi analyzer on android to do the latter) then your router should be ok, as long as you aren't miles away from it and don't have several walls inbetween. Yeh wired should be better, i can't tell the difference though. For battery life ShiWarrior recommends an Anker power bank from Amazon, i had 1 delivered today but haven't tested it yet. He says he can play the Dungeons game for a couple of hours and still has 94% charge. But tbh for MSFS a wire is no bother really anyway.

But if I can get better visuals or performance from wireless then Id like to try it.

My router is 5GHz but in the downstairs living room and I don't have wired ethernet to PC, so I'd need a dedicated router.

Been thinking about getting a headset for a while. Had a PSVR for a few years and now have a great gaming PC, this would work great with as well as solo use.

Am I better getting the 3 over the 2?

Oh it is without a doubt.
Latency is noticeably lower using a cable and like you said you can push bitrate much higher.
I just upgraded to enterprise grade 6Ghz access point which was £270 and I’m still not convinced it is good enough.
For sims I would go with a cable every time.

I say get 3 the pancake lenses alone are worth it, wireless PCVR is great with it I've been playing with 200 Bitrate AV1 codec with 35-45ms latency on a virgin media Superhub 5, once you go wireless you cant go back. wait for a battery headstrap tho its runs out fast.

See people keep saying it but to me quality and latency just isn’t good enough especially VD that even at 200mbps AV1 is just bad.!
And I’m using 4090 and enterprise grade 6Ghz access point with only Quest 3 using this wireless band.
I wish we could have high resolution headset with high bandwidth 60Ghz wireless link with little to no compression.

Is your wireless access point connected directly to the PC using a network cable? Or is it a mesh network. The difference in latency between wired and wireless on the Quest 3 should be minimal.

Connected directly to the same poe switch.
Before that I had it connected to separate switch so it was going through my router and there was no noticeable difference.
In VD network latency is hovering between 2-6ms when gaming.

Whats your total Latency? I could also run h.264+ at 400bits but I couldn't see a difference so switched back to av1 as it less taxing on my PC, HEVC didn't give me less latency ether.

My network latency is also something like 2-5ms most of the latency for me comes from the decoding as long as my pc has the resources to meet the target 120fps if max out my PC and lose fps then the game latency shoots up, going wired is only going to save me that 2-5ms right? isn't the decoding going to be the same or worse if you send more bits down the wire.

You should also try turning video buffer off in VD that can save you a lot of latency I've had on it on and off and not noticed anymore stutter.

Will do some more testing tomorrow and report back, however from my previous testing airlink gives me much higher quality at a given bitrate than VD.
100mbps h265 airlink is equal or better than 200mbps AV1 VD.
500mbps h264 wired oculus link has much higher quality and lower latency than both wireless solutions.

Anyway to see latency numbers in airlink and wired ? nevermind found it.

I like a simple answer. :D

If you can comfortably afford the Quest 3 then get one as it's better than the Quest 2.

Although the the Quest 2 is still pretty good (we were happy enough with it before the 3 came out) and if you're not sure about spending that much money then there will be bargains on the Quest 2. In fact there must be quite a few used Q2 that are now gathering dust as the owners have moved on to the Q3. I can't see myself ever using my Q2 again now I have a Q3 and should probably think about selling it.

I can easily afford it come next week.

Would you recommend the better strap with the battery pack?

I have a third party strap for the Quest 2 but so far have been using the stock one for the Q3. To be fair I haven't had any really mammoth gaming sessions with the Q3 yet - never seem to have the time!
