Quest 3 preview

Quest 2 is sold - £165 for 64GB on the bay. I don't think CEX will make the same mistake as last time offering decent trade in prices.

One month to go before pre-orders :)

Yeah, CEX cash prices for most Quest 2 model's are only just over £100 so I can imagine this will drop to 2 figures once the Quest 3 is out. Having said that I haven't really used my Quest 2 in a while as the current game release schedule has been pretty lacklustre. I'll maybe wait to see if they announce any new titles before hitting that pre-order button. Hopefully they convert more of their Oculus Rift PC titles lke Lone Echo and the original Asgard's Wrath to Quest once the new model is out. Would help bolster the game line-up.

Still tempted to grab the Quest 3 when it's launched though! Unfortunately selling my Quest 2 doesn't sound like it'll cover much of the cost unlike when upgraded to Quest 2 from the original ! :(

Lone Echo was the only game i wanted tp play in VR then saw it was pc vr only and a rift exclusive :/
i'd buy a q3 just for that tbh always had good reviws + robo recall.

I sold my Q2 via Ebay around April/May and got about £250 as i knew prices would drop closer to the Q3's release. I've missed it but it's coincided with a mini vr break i'm having and i'm really looking forward to getting back into it with the Q3. I'm not worried about the specs, i'm sure it'll be great just like the Q2 was a step-up, i'll be buying asap hopefully from OC if they have day 1 stock.

Asgard wrath 2 is going to be out about the same time as quest 3

What do you guys expect regards clarity improvement for PCVR? What's the current limitation of the quest 2, for example if it's encoding, then that won't change between q2 and Q3, or is it the display itself or is it the lenses?

lenses will help with a much larger sweetspot but doesnt the chip on the quest pro actually do a better job of the encoding over link? thank Q2. presumably quest 3 will be better again still?

but the single screen limiting the FOV at my IPD, as well as wasted pixels , as well as the tracking of the controllers, and the lack of foveated rendering really puts me off it... which is a shame.

i am torn... do i buy a quest pro now, (i have quite a library of oculus titles) with the view that if Q3 dissapoints the Q Pro may actually go up in value.

or do i hang fire in the hope that quest pro gets an upgrade to use the same chip in the quest 3 (which is rumours are true is unlikely)

Why wouldn't encoding change? Far more powerful processor means it can unpack much faster, better Wifi means it can receive more data. At the very least, a better chip would perhaps be able to improve ASW performance. It also supports decoding the new AV1 codec, which might make a larger difference.

I doubt the image quality will be better than the Pro overall for PCVR. It might look higher resolution but there's more to a display than resolution.

I hope I'm proved wrong, but I think the Pro will be the go-to for PCVR for a while due to the FOV and the QLED displays with local dimming.

When I tried the Q2 again the other day after using the Pro for months it struck me how narrow the FOV was, especially as I could see the panel edges. I really don't want to go back to a single panel if that's what Q3 has.

Still need a good enough grfxs card to both render and then encode.. in whichever encoding format...

Also however good the encoding is.. it is always lossy, so there is always a degrading of the image..

Then there is wifi speed, and latency.. (just ask @Ravenger :) )

A display port is a good idea.. IF you have the card to directly drive the pixels.. lots of pixels in VR..

All in all there is no 'perfect' vr headset yet, mainly because the hardware to drive it doesn't exist.

It's all compromise.. just have to choose which compromise suits you best.. given the hardware you have..

Shame there's going to be a bit of a choice to be made by some between the Pro and the Q3 rather than just one more expensive headset with a generally more comprehensive set of supererior features over the cheaper option.

I'll likely go for the Q3 as the quick apparent discontinuance and low sales for the Pro don't inspire confidence that it will be well supported going forward.

I may even end up with a similar situation to my Index and Q2 where I use the Pro for PCVR and the Q3 for standalone.

The index is now retired since the Pro completely blows it out of the water in terms of image quality AND can do it wireless.

This is what will put me off buying a Q3 (and the fact the battery is still in the front, so depends on how comfortable it is)

i for one wanted the index 2 anyway, but the fact that you lot have meta headsets, puts me off the Index 2

The answer really is that it depends. They have a put a new decoder into the Quest 3, but the only new feature might be the ability to decode AV1. It might not be any faster at decoding h.265/h.265 than the decoder in the Quest 2. Don't think the CPU speed really matters as the decoder is a separate chip.

And If the Quest 3's decoding speed isn't improved over the Quest 2, then having a Wifi 6 connection isn't going to make a bit of difference. The bottleneck is still going to be the decoder.

WIFI6E makes a difference as it's on a less congested spectrum and has lower latency.

I considered the wired usb link speed capacity was already at max.
