Was it a rookie class race ?
If so heres a tip always stay back on the 1st lap let half grid take them selfs out.
Yeah it was. I was more annoyed at myself because I saw the accident developing but didn't slow down and just sort of hoped the car wouldn't be there when I got round the corner.

I finally managed a completely clean race on my 5th attempt. Stayed back at the start but it seemed to be a relatively clean race compared to the ones before. I wasn't miles off the pace either. :)

Taken out first corner then got a 2 minute penalty for going too far off track! Oops!

Unless it's new in this build, there's no penalty for going too far off track. I'm guessing you reset after the T1 incident, and after doing that you have to wait while an imaginary tow truck drags you round the track back from where you crashed to the pits.

One quick tip if you're simply looking for a good race/gaining SR is to start from the pits, when the 'Grid' button appears ignore that and wait until it reads 'Missed Start', then click it and you'll be in the pits waiting to be let out.

Generally you'll be 6-8s behind the last guy from the grid as you exit but it's amazing how much of that you can gain as they jostle for position around the first few corners and then you can generally catch up to and pass a few cars.

Not always the most interesting race/best finishing position but it removes the danger of the start (or T1) at least.

I went too far off at limerock whilst trying to slow myself down and stay out the barrier but fell through the track at the wooded area.

How does SR work? I appeared to get penalties for being involved in accidents even though they were not my fault?

SR is a no-blame system, so if two cars hit each other that's 4 incidents (or 'a 4x') each, doesn't matter who was 'at fault'

Yes it can be a bit 'unfair' at times but it evens out nicely over time :)

So if I go off track, like wide at a corner, but not miles off and 1x pops up, it's still having an effect on my SR?

I think the idea is that it gets rid of any blame for an accident so it encourages you to learn how to avoid them. It is annoying though when you end up in an accident where you were a complete passenger in the whole thing but you still effectively get punished.

I think that still counts as an incident which will have a negative effect on your SR.

SR works by magic same as how sites get higher up on google listings its all magic.
Other words by some very strange math x+y*w if / then 123 \ by the power of 212 +tt -vz = how the SR is worked out.

Best thing is don't get involved in accidents, stay back for the 1st corner on the 1st lap.
If someone is racing hard behind you all over your tail then just let them pass, 50% of the time they will crash up the road better then 80% of the time they will crash in the back of you if you don't let them pass.
If there are two cars in front on you having a fight then hold back a little don't get to close 50% of the time they will take each other out or one of the two will crash.
then you just drive on pass.
If you are faster then the car in front then put presser on them but back off before tight turns then may brake to soon & you will drive right in the back of them.

The above is only for the rookie class races soon as you get out of there the next step is the skippy you will find better drivers there as they have spent some money on tracks & a car, then you can get your iRating up the higher your iRating the better safer drivers you get to race with.

Just keep it clean & your SR will go up, your iRating will drop if you don't race hard but just get out of the rookie class first.
My iRating dropped to 700 but my SR shot up when I started.

SR is worked out from 'corners per incident', as per the following graph...

The higher your license level, the more affected your SR becomes by incidents.

I wouldn't worry about getting the odd 1x or 2x for off tracks or spins, when you have 20+ incidents in a race you know it's a bad one though.

It's a shame it doesn't match you with similarly skilled drivers.

If there are sufficient drivers registered for a race so that it spilts, the split is done by iRating.

If it's a manual box then yes, drive it like a road car.

That said not all sequential systems appreciate foot-flat changes.

I appear to go faster when I lift for gear changes but that might be just me.

Is there a newbies guide for iRacing or do I pretty much know all there is to know now?

@Bean0 do you still race? We used to race together in LFS.
