Racist or not?

to be -ist of any kind doesn't it have to imply some form of differentiation where one or more but not all is denigrated? if all colours in this image are equally compared to toast, there is no differentiation that I can see.

unless it's showing that the most white of the four is underdone and so not toast ergo bad, and the darkest of the four is overdone and so inedible? the middle two are both acceptable toast?

I think I'm stretching here though.
 
Nothing racist about it whatsoever.

Were the people in the chat group that called it racist black? As they just love pulling the racist card out at every opportunity.

A few in the group commented that they thought it was racist. I could see it was comparing skin colour to toast colour but it wasnt specifically saying 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 was any better or worse.
It wasnt a funny picture, more a comparison and probably just a way of provoking people into commenting like most pictures posted on the internet.

The thing about a toaster right, is you have levels of done.

Mines got 1 to 5 on it. If I put it on 5 it’s not going to come out white is it. It’s going to set my toaster on fire and the bread will become that crisp if I throw it at someone it’s going to knock them clean out.

Taking racism to the next level I think when someone has suggested comparing it to colours of the skin. Didn’t even need to be fetched up in the first place.
 
I think this example is more clear cut than the Lady Hussey example from last week.

The image is playing on skin colour variation to (try to) be funny. Not implying any inferiority, discrimination or antagonism though, so I don't think it's actually meeting the full definition of racist, but still it is picking on that trait to crack a joke.
 
I guess the racism side of this is why they felt the need to post that into a group at all. It is a bit of a dog whistle to people who wouldn't consider such crap as humour --- not least to the extent they then took several steps to share it into a WhatsApp group.

Reminds me of the scary comedian that everyone assumes is racist, but self proclaimed "was partly responsible for the West Indians taking over London by shagging a load of them and making tonnes of kids".

Would need to be in the right frame of mind to find it humorous, maybe drunk would be a good start.

I think it's very insensitive due to the trauma it will cause people trying to work out who is suffering when a varied group is described as toast shades.
 
How times of changed from when Charlie Williams was on "The Comedians", a hugely popular and successful UK comedy variety show, on at prime time.

One of his favourite lines was to say to the audience, "If you don't behave I'll come a live next door to you" .

He was black and suggesting his presence would devalue your house. no one ever raised a storm and such self effacing humour was quite common by coloured comedians.
