Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

It's about AMD targeting the mass market. If the performing there then I think they got it spot on. I'll be waiting for Vega, but then I have 2 390s. Might pick up a 460 or 470 for my 3rd PC though.

No, it's about AMD not having anything to counter the GTX 1080 with. They just aren't ready yet. Do you honestly think they would put all of this effort into developing a chip, just to release a low-end part? Now, I know they said they wanted to target the lowest VR segment, but that may have been after seeing the first silicon and noticing that it didn't perform as well as they would have hoped (and I really doubt the low-end segment is interested in VR at all). The 290/290x/390/390x/Nano and GTX 970 are already good enough for that, and the prices of these cards would have fallen had AMD announced something competitive. Pretty sure many of us would preferred to have GTX 1070 performance at <£300 rather than 290x performance at £200. Hell they could have just lowered the price of the nano, and voila. There's really no need for the RX 480 if you really think about it.

That represents 85% of the market? Yeah, you're damned right I do. back at you.

Don't confuse what the enthusiasts want with whats most profitable for AMD.

I think there is a great need for a cheap fast card in the current era of austerity. There really isn't a big market for $500+ cards. This forum is a bubble, I bet 99% of OC customers never even come here...

Wouldn't surprise me if these chips are pushed to the limit again like the Fury line and only overclockable by 50-100Mhz :(

Hope I'm wrong!!! AMD sure do need a tweakable chip, been a looooong time since we had one!

I mean 14LPP is meant to be rated at up to 2.1 GHz or thereabouts. But presumably that's a rating for ARM type chips.

It would appear polaris is a higher IPC and lower clocks type design.

It'll just be such a tease of unrealised potential if the 480 is faster clock-for-clock than the 1070, but isn't able to clock high enough for that to matter.

Had AMD announced a full Polaris chip that would have been able to compete with the GTX 1070 for less money, then guess what? The prices of the Fury X, Fury, Nano, 390 and 390x GPUs would have fallen by a lot. That means we would have been able to buy a nano for the same price or lower than what they are going to be selling the RX 480 for (or what the retail price is going to be).

Disappointed that we didn't see a 490, still hold out hope.

Still... if the 480 is stock clocked to 1266mhz and it's easy for board partners to push it to 1350 to 1400, then we may still see a card that forces Nvidia to revise their pricing.

Unfortunately allot of us on here are part of a small minority, we want cards that perform like the 1070 and above. It's simply not an important segment of the market, especially when AMDs strategy is different.

To be honest, if the 480 can be pushed and if Nvidia still maintain these silly prices. I'll go for the 480... if Nvidia respond with price drops, I'll go for 1070 or 1080. I'm not paying anything over £300 for a 1070 or £420 for a 1080.
