Oh the 390x runs faster clock for clock? I always assumed it was just clocked faster and the 8g ram just prevented the big dips in fps ya get on the 290s when they run out o vram in benchmarks.

The 390x scores higher than the 290x at the same clocks, mainly due to tighter memory timings / memory controller timings.

It also has better power delivery and tends to overclock a little better.

The 290x did receive all the same driver improvements that the 390x did though, and the difference between the two is very very small.

Tbh, we don't even know it's going to be able to match a 390X performance yet.

All AMD's slides were showing 390 (non-X) as the baseline for "VR Ready". And the 480 is supposed to be bringing *that* performance to the mainstream.

I'm prepared for 480 = 390, not 480 = 390X.

e: dm, you know full well we're talking about perf/£ being the same, not just perf. Obviously. We've said it all the way through the thread, so you have no excuse.

sadly you're off as we've already seen benches putting 470 at 970 speed.......so the 480 can't be at 390 speeds....it will be 980 speed +

Just so people know our landed cost on 8G version is over $200 !!!

Did AMD announce 8G at $199 or 4G?

What I recall is 4G at $199 and 8G at $229.

I also read most retailers are going for 8G stock as they consider the difference to be too small for someone to go for the 4G version...

I expect 4G will be mostly for system builders where every margin saving adds up. 8G is an easier sell for direct to end-users.

Sadly? :p I'd be most happy to be wrong about this. I'd be snapping up a 480 if it's 980+ speeds for £200, believe me. Not in synthetic benches, but in the majority or at least 50% of games tested.

I'll even eat my words (once I've fashioned them into the form of a cake).

*Sadly* I just don't see it happening.

If its 25% more than my 970 I will be buying it too but the information we have right now is its not that, it might not even be a 970.

There in lays a huge problem for me with it.

sep the benches from 470 show otherwise my friend - they show it matching the 970.....so how is the 480 now suddenly now only 970 speeds.....

All the information that's come how is 480 will be 980 speeds in DX 11 and faster in DX 12.......

a lot of leaks we know for a fact either been with early drivers which hold back performance and different bios which hold back performance. I've said from the beginning where the performances should fall with boost.

Its the OC that's the big unknown along with the aftermarket cards.....baseline performance of the 480 will be 980 speeds......anymore after that is a bonus and for its price it will be a hell of a card....I'll be snagging 470 to replace 7870LE and 480 to replace my 290 and sell my 290.....which should get me the 470about free..:)

This, good people, should be your wake up call.

OcUK already hinting that the margin isn't sufficient to sell at AMD's RRP.

For those of you thinking that the 4gb will be <£200, and the 8gb <£215, I'd suggest revising your pricing expectations waaaaay higher.

OcUK will not be selling these cards a) at cost, b) with tiny margins.

Under the hot sun.
Meldarthx makes a good point. Driver maturity, which in the case of AMD is true, and support cards in long term.

See the R9 290 is 4 years old card. See its performance boost those 4 years and got full DX12 support.
Even if didnt had it on the sticker (as some argued that for the GTX9xx series against the R9 )

Now see the GTX780

Calling it now.

4gig version £220.
8gig version £260.

Hopefully I am wrong and they come in at sub £200 for the 4gig and around £220 for the 8gig.

they are a business . we are in uk. we expect it.

we know they going to be priced too high on launch or pre order. its 99 percent given. :p the difference is how much higher or gouging will be done just because of we have stock so take it. ;)

i did say straight off bat ~£220 for 4gb because the 970 gtx dropped to £215 and 8gb version starting at £250. lets see. how much extra is added.
