Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Well at the moment I'm not desperately needing a new gpu so I might wait for aftermarket to be released just incase. Hopefully it should be here sooner rather than later so I can get my much needed upgrade..

My fingers are crossed it'll run 1440p freesync at max or very close.. Might be hoping for a tad to much though :P

I think everything at Max might be pushing it, but lets hope. I was in the same boat but I ended up getting the 1070 but might buy the 480 today if the benches are good and sell the 1070 as I have a freesync monitor.

We shall see.

I can't remember the last time I have been soooo excited about the end of an NDA. Bring on the reviews. *gets comfortable*

I was more pumped by the Fiji launch and had one on pre-order, so I'm trying to manage my expectations better this time around. Been a rollercoaster. :D

Just buy reference and watercool it - problem solved! :D The reference cards OC really well apparently, just not with the stock cooler (source).

If that's true AMD will get hammered again for a poor stock cooler as people will feel like they are missing out on free performance.

Everywhere I have seen these couldn't get past 1.4Ghz, are people saying now they have released an updated driver that improves this?

Probably limited by temps. Hopefully we'll see what it can do under water/ln2 soon enough.

No I think we will find out more over the coming week, when people have had chance to tinker around with voltages and what not, but if what is mentioned in the link is true, well the cooler is the limiting factor, and no-one should be surprised by that.

This again? Is this a joke? It's a 480, not 490x or Vega Fury or whatever. Were you really expecting a £200 card to match a £350 - £450 980ti? Seriously?

Those £350 and £450 cards are last generation's cards.

What are your expectations from a new generation, then? With a node shrink?

Same price/perf as old generation? If so, then you are a corporations wet dream.

I would *certainly* expect a £200 card to match a £350 last-gen card. Maybe not the £450 one, true.

Why would you personally settle for less?

Someone said that the chip itself wasn't good at over-clocking and so the custom coolers wouldn't improve the situation. Does that sound legit?

Its a low power, low heat alternative, which matches last gens top tier cards (390x). If you were expecting more for £200 you were being little naive.

where does a 390x sit in comparison to a nvidia card? Never had amd but really tempted by the one, only currently on a gtx 960 at the moment

to clarify its a 480 i'm considering, people just dkeep comparing it to a 390x

Wafer costs have increased dramatically - the benefit of moving to 14/16nm is more about decreasing power usage and increasing performance rather than increasing the performance per transistor/dollar. Previously all of these metrics would improve but improvements in the latter have stalled.
