Yeah! It's more a complaint at performance than pricing to be honest since as you said they didn't really have much say over pricing. There may be logic in buying the 8gb card over a 390 or 970 in terms of new tech, but they didn't really redefine that price range. This is why if I was to buy this card (I was literally about to pull the trigger before the 4gb card pricing changed here) it would definitely be the 4gb card.

Yep to me it's like some people think AMD choose the price for every country/retailer. All AMD seem to do is put a a recommended retail price out in $. After this it's up to the board partners and retailers to get pricing sorted. What then effects this pricing is your exchange rates to the $. I am sure there is more things like shipping that can effect these things but in the US these cards sold around about where the RRP was.

They have redefined the performance you get in the $229 range. At $229 all you could buy before this launch was a 380x/gtx960. They have moved performance on massively. If you lived in the US and paid in Dollars you would see this. You are looking to much into the UK price/performance which is making results not so great.
The cheapest i can see for a 380x on a big U.S. site is $204 to put things in perspective. You can grab a Rx480 4gb for $199.

Could always nip the to the local depot and pick it up if your really impatient haha.

That's to much on a second hand gtx970 which is getting a bit dated. It's still a pretty good dx11 card but in dx12 it shows it's age in most titles.
With your CPU I would go with the 480. If you had a crap CPU like mine then I would have said go with the 970!
The 480 is likely to improve more than the 970 with drivers.
If the used 970 is around £160-180 then don't buy it. The 480 4GB is a better deal at around £175 since it's new tech with 8GB VRAM and is a bit faster than 970 and comes close to a 980/390x in DX12. The used 970 will have to be less than £150 to be in the running imo.
Why is it silly money? What is the alternative for £250-£275 that will be good for DX12?

A lot of people are naysaying... perhaps look at the 390. Pretty much beats the 480 currently since you can get one for £200ish. At £150 for a 970 though... go for it. That or a £200 390. Heck, that's what the 480 should have been...
Agreed. £275 for an AIB 480 (even the £260 that Gibbo quoted)... it might as well be a 390 rebrand. I thought the 480 was supposed to be a leap forward in price to performance... it's pretty much following the 1070s footsteps at this rate. Up the pricing tier by one on next gen. 480 being sold at 390 prices, just like the 1070 is being sold at 980 prices. Major disappointment on that. Fingers crossed they get rid of 20% VAT (I hear it's an EU thing), it's the only hope of more reasonable prices this gen lol.
I better do some searching to find this mythical £175 4GB 480... at this rate the aftermarket 4GB 480s will be over £200.
Better off getting a 390X or 980 at that price. So grab em quick before they go!
I know and that's my predicament at the moment.... the 390X or hold out for a AIB 480? But other than the 390X there is nothing else worth getting....maybe I'll hold out to the 1060 and really then have some choice. I would like to by new tech rather than 2-3 year old tech.
