Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Well I have to say that this 480 is the worst card I have ever had. No idea if it is drivers or the card or whatever but I have had enough. Just trying to put together a video showing benchmarks in loads of games (was going for 20) but so far I have only managed to get one game out of 4 to run (alien Isolation). I have had "The display driver has stopped responding", I have had lock ups, I have had the game.exe has stopped working.

I thought it might be Mirrilis Action causing the problem, so went with my external capture card and nope, not having it still. What a waste of time and effort!

Sounds like a duff card and RMA time to me. :(

Playing The Division with no problems at all and can play for a couple of hours, so doesn't appear to be a duff card but running ROTTR, AoTS, Batman AK resulted in all different crashes and I have had enough now. It was a complete clean OS as well, so no idea. I have put the 1080 back in now and will run some bench tests and if I get crashes now, then it would indicate if it was my OS/system but I doubt it very much.

This is why i never buy AMD reference cards anymore...

Even if it increased the price by a small amount, if they had a better heatsink with heat-pipes and kept the blower cooler, it would have been far better on thermals in comparison.

Although if they tune the voltages more they run better. People have been getting 1.3ghz stable and better performance and cooler running cards by dropping the voltage by 0.075V across the board.

Hey greg, have you tried undervolting your RX480 yet? people seem to be getting some very good results by doing so.

Think someone set the AVFS to keep the Voltage a bit richer than it should be.

I didn't bud and nor should I have to. I know what you are saying and it is a fair point and I would have really wanted to tell people who are new to pc gaming or gaming at 1080P to get the 480 but having to undervolt the card to get it stable just makes no sense and the whole release feels rushed.

I am genuinely gutted :(

Seeing as this is supposed to be a card for the masses it should work out of the box. Hope the non reference cards are built in a smarter way

I know how you feel.

I RMA'd my first thinking it was faulty.

When the second failed to get going, I tried out pretty much everything to get it to work.

Turns out, the drivers would not install on ultrawide monitors. I had to install the card with an old 1080p monitor attached, then I was free to plug in the UW and it would work.

Awful experience for me, but the card does work nicely now it's set up, even 1440p UW.

Greg, can you try something? Look for the Power Efficiency Setting in the Global settings section of Radeon Settings and set it to "ON" and see if this resolves your issues.

I have driver crashes and full system freezes with my R9 390X, but only when the Power Efficiency Setting is set to "OFF". My problems aren't as bad as yours though.

It sounds like you might just have a bad card. Have you thought about returning it?

How about doing so and instead reviewing the Nitro? I think the non ref cards are of more interest to enthusiasts anyway.

Yer, I did try that on day 1 of testing as I remembered having to do the same with my 6970 but it made no difference sadly.

That does sound like a good plan. Yer, might well do that.

I'd never buy a ref card of any flavour, simply because you're not getting the example of virtually any card. Ref's make little sense to me apart from cost. Many people like myself only buy once every few years, so the extra for non ref makes much more sense.
