Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Considering how big this thread is and how much attention the 480 got, I would have thought there would be more than a handful of owners in the 480 owners thread.

Seems to me everyone felt let down by the 480. I certainly was. Going to 14nm I was expecting more from this card, not to mentioned new architecture. And before someone says this was the 380 replacement, yes I know..

I really hope AMD does a much better job with Vega. They will have no excuses, as it will be developed primarily for desktops and for users like us.

I was about to buy one, but the 390X Nitro was marked down to 259, and at 229/239 the 480 with a reference cooler just didn't look worth it.

If AMD's partners got their cards out on launch I would have the 480 nitro instead right now.

Understandable. I hope the AMD partner cards can overclock nicely. The 480 Nitro does look like a nice card, aesthetically anyway.

I have a 1070 coming which I pre-ordered a few weeks back on the cheap and will be sticking with that until next year when Vega comes along. I am expecting big Vega to be 50-70% faster than 1070 at 4k. Hopefully it does not disappoint.

One fella here got a 10fps boost with his Fury X in Rise of the Tomb Raider using the new DX12 implementation:

I do suppose if I wanted to play devil's advocate with the conspiracy stuff, Nvidia could have held back this update til after 480 reviews came out, just to keep back any Rise of the Tomb Raider bench results from flattering the card too much?

I still am not inclined to believe it, but it wouldn't be implausible.

Well I have to say that this 480 is the worst card I have ever had. No idea if it is drivers or the card or whatever but I have had enough. Just trying to put together a video showing benchmarks in loads of games (was going for 20) but so far I have only managed to get one game out of 4 to run (alien Isolation). I have had "The display driver has stopped responding", I have had lock ups, I have had the game.exe has stopped working.

I thought it might be Mirrilis Action causing the problem, so went with my external capture card and nope, not having it still. What a waste of time and effort!

Use that Radeon Raptr thing, its bloatware but recording works very well, or at least it did 10 months ago last i used it.

Or until most of their Pascal range is out as Pascal seems to perform a decent bit better in DX12.

Managing graphics tasks to two different GPU's is the problem. It's not that it cant be done, it's that it becomes a lot more difficult and requires more effort to be done right. And as scaling never works in a reliable manner due to bottlenecks, it's not necessarily the most efficient route anyways.

And Vulkan is even farther behind than DX12.

If you want a list of upcoming big PC games that wont use DX12:

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Civilization VI
Dishonored 2
FIFA 17
For Honor
Mafia 3
Mass Effect Andromeda
Prey
Resident Evil 7
Shadow Warrior 2
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
Tekken 7
Titanfall 2
Ghost Recon: Wildlands
No Man's Sky

I'm sure there's more.

I mean, I really think the announcement of all those Xbox titles coming to PC really kind of twisted the picture a bit in terms of the amount of support DX12 is getting in the big picture.

civ6 will have dx12 backend
fifa 17 will use frostbite this time around, so chances are it could be dx12
bethesda is like 5 years behind in graphics with all their games, so doesnt really count :D, mass effect and prey could we dont know that much about them anyway.
we dont know about titanfall2 also.
you actualy cannot say that your list will not use dx12 half we have no idea and could go either way, and the other half can hardly call triple A :D, shadow warrior, tekken, no man's sky ?
and i still think mgpu on console wont be that expensive or that much of a hassle, considering the trade off, which is a lot more performance to work with and to push visuals even further, most devs would have a blast working on 5teraflop of compute rather than 2.

I think a lot of people are on a 3 year upgrade cycle (by looking at various posts) me included

So the DX 12 performance discussion is a valid one imo

We need to see some reviews for these AIB custom cards, is there an NDA Or something? wondering why nothings been said yet? or is it just supply of cards to reviewers has not happened yet?

Think it's the lack of custom cards. I'm sure once those come out more people will buy 480. I for one pre-ordered Saphire Nitro and many others did as well.

AMD Lists The Radeon RX 490 Flagship – Polaris based Dual GPU Graphics Card For 4K Ready Gaming

The RX 490 will be AMD’s 4K ready flagship that will be taking on the GTX 1080 at a (probably) similar price point. It is going to be the crown jewel in AMD’s RX lineup. The existing Polaris based lineup currently maxes out at the Polaris 10 based RX 480 – which is roughly equivalent to the GTX 1060 in terms of graphical performance. According to AMD, Polaris 10 is the largest 14nm FinFET GPU available right now and that raises interesting questions what we can expect from the RX 490.

so rumour they are having to go dualy to fight the 1080, oh dear (if true) :/

Sorry but i cant believe a single word WCCFTech spout, especially with regards to AMD rumors, they have not only been wrong, but infact so wrong i wonder how they manage to even operate a PC.

Official statement i will believe, Videocardz or WCCFtech garbage i just ignore

Exactly. Can't believe you guys even give traffic to that website.

Besides, it is obvious they are talking about the small Vega here when they say "It is going to be the crown jewel in AMD’s RX lineup." as the big Vega which will come next year will be Fury line replacement. Therefore I am supriesed at Loadsamoney's post.
