Rafa deserves the chance to overachieve with Liverpool again

Huh? I was talking about the buying club not Liverpool and their demands.

If Torres were to leave this summer (which I believe is unlikely regardless of CL football) then it will only be for similar money to what Ronaldo went for, which surely rulse out sensible clubs.

Hang on, if (and it's looking increasingly likely) Liverpool don't make it into the CL this season, won't the owners be up the creek with all the lost revenue? Surely, they'd then be forced to listen to even half decent offers for Torres et al. I really can't see someone spending anywhere near Ronaldo's cost if Liverpool find themselves in financial difficulty.

Who is going to spend 70 mil on someone who only plays approx 1/2 his league games. I would expect an offer of 30 mil to be accepted.

Firstly, why is it looking increasingly likely? Yes we're playing shockingly bad and Spurs and Villa are having fantatic seasons, yet we're 4 points off of 4th and have actually been closing the gap in recent weeks.

Regarding the state of the finances if we didn't qualify for the CL. The club would stand to lose ~£20-30m by missing out on the CL however as of next season we're going to be earning ~£15m more per season from our shirt sponsor. On top of that the club were forced to reduce it's bank debt by £70m this year (which is where the £23m (confirmed in a leaked document) transfer budget went) which will save a further ~£6m in interest payments.

I hate those Yank ****s for raping the club, however we're not as financially unstable as people think. No doubt if we didn't qualify for the CL things would be tighter but we're not going to be in a position where we are forced to sell players like Leeds were (just like we didn't sell Gerrard or Owen when we failed to qualify under Houllier).

And finally regarding your point about clubs not being willing to pay Ronaldo type money if they think we had to sell; it makes no difference how desperate we might be, there would be enough interest in him to start a bidding war.

there's no way Torres would only go for £30million. double it and you'd be about right. maybe a couple of million less as he does have slightly dodgy hamstrings.

If Liverpool were in such a bad way that they needed to sell him then i think they'd take 30 mil. A couple of interested parties could well up the price a fair bit though.

If were in an ever worse way and only 1 club bid then maybe we'd take £1m too :p

That's never going to be the case though. If Torres were to become available there'd be numerous interested clubs, several that could afford to pay upwards of £40m and then City and Real where anything is possible.

Its a funny situation with Torres. On the one hand he is loathe to goto RM for obvious reasons. City still aren't an attraction for the cream of the crop despite their Millions.

Which is why I can't see him leaving us.

As above, I don't think we're going to be in a position where we're going to have to sell him. However a stupid offer which City or Real are capable of making might be too good to turn down if the club/manager believe that the money could be spent in a way which would make the side better overall (providing the money didn't go towards paying debt ;)). But then would Torres join either of them? Doubt it.

Carragher - Woefully off form and making mistakes that he simply wouldn't have made a few years ago. Shouldn't be a first team regular anymore.
.

He should offer to play for England. Ever since he quit england to concentrate on club form he's been ****.

I don't see any good in getting rid of rafa, unless they had the money to give to a new manager whats the point. May as well continue with rafa and try to sort the club finances out first.

The debt is slowly dragging them down and the same will happen at united. The players are getting older and the monies drying up, getting rid of rafa won't change that.

As I've said before whats happened to both clubs that were stable before then having all this debt borrowed against them should not be allowed to happen.

Just realised that in order to sack Rafa and appoint a new manager would mean our owners would have to agree on 2 decisions. I don't think they've managed that in the 3 years they've been here.

Again, it isnt it doesnt mention the hundreds of players signed, the money spent, and the total lack of progress shown by the side under Benitez, its all nonsense excuses about how hard done by he his.
IF he finishes below Arsenal OR Villa, he has no excuses, they have all spent less.

His league finishes are no better than Houlliers, Houllier spent less money, and won more cups, yet he got the bullet.

A squad full of people he has signed.

Don't know how they can miss that, and while other clubs DO have youth players coming through, youth players they have bought for very little and have come through already of which several/many have been bought since Benitez's time at the club. IE he could have bought 20 16 year olds for £10k a pop 5 years ago and had them all in the first team by now, but theres not a sign of any of them.

Where would Utd have been in the past couple years without Evans coming through to cover for injured players, Macheda last year proved crucial in a couple monumentally important games. City have Ireland and supposedly several very good players coming through.

Plenty of teams have spent a lot less than Liverpool and currently have a FAR better squad, even if a few players Liverpool have are higher in quality.

Benitez didn't have to publically try and get rid of Alonso, go after Barry and as a by product tell Alonso he rates Barry far higher than him, but he did didn't he. He didn't have to crack under the pressure last season, and the one before, and this season, but he has. He doesn't have to make absurd subs and he doesn't have to buy 30million squid strikers to compete.

Infact the only season he really did anything, his first, was with someone esles squad and very little immediate pressure, the higher the pressure and the expectations got, the worse he's seemed to react to it. Infact this only increased in the champions league final, when he got there and at each stage no one expected them to be there, no one expected them to be in a final and at halftime no one expected they could possibly win, at that stage he had maybe the least expectation to live up to at any stage of his career, and the time he made all the right choices. WHen he's actually expected to compete and win, he goes bonkers.

Liverpool really should sell off Torres and Gerrard to fund the push for a better squad rather than two stars. Especially as they aren't fit enough to be important enough to the team.

Had Liverpool kept say Bellamy, bought 2-3 very good players instead of the single excellent Torres and had 3-4 at least squad players who are remotely decent come through the youth ranks Liverpools situation would be vastly different.

I still fail to see the tactical genius that is Benitez, infact I've never seen it. Anger players, tell them they are crap and make them want to leave, drag out an entire summer over an extra 1-2mil over Barry and fail to get him, throw dummy out the pram when the owners want 2 whole weeks to consider a 20mil+ purchase of Mascherano. HIs tactical genius tag seems to all come from........ one half(albeit important one) against Milan in a final, seeing his subs, his buying strategy and his starting line ups over the years I see no other evidence of it, as its supposed to be his greatest strength thats very worrying.

^^forgive me, but do you actually have an opinion formulated on what you've witnessed or is regurgitating attention-mongering media drivel just that much easier?

Be quiet.

DM has a point in terms of Liverpool not bringing through young players. They haven't really done it since Gerrard.

They have a poor squad other then Gerrard / Torres who've been off form this season. Mash and Reina.

Rafa was daft over saying that he wanted Barry and pushing Alonso out.

Rafa has spent a lot of money and doesn't have much to show for it.

I also don't get Liverpool fans when they say Torres won't play for another English club or certain clubs in Spain?

He left Athletico, his home club and the club he supported.

Like who? Villa have spent bucket loads, as have Spurs, who has spent less and have a better squad?

And keep Bellamy? they guy hit a teammate round the head with a Golf Club..... One player we should have kept was Keane, but pretty much all the players he's shipped havent really gone on to do much.

Anyone know how much Villa and Spurs have spent in the time Rafa has being at Liverpool?

Rafa has spent £229 million as of October 09 according to the internets.
