Ramadan Mubarakh..!

It's sometimes the case that the amount of calories consumed at iftar is greater than during a normal day and weight is gained

I have a question,

Do you dudes all get shredded?

With 30 days fasting you can get a mean 6pac going I'd imagine.

No. In fact it's pretty much the opposite. People typically spend up to twice as much on extra indulgent, double portions of fancy food to eat when the fast breaks. Hypocrites actually get greedier and consume more calories during Ramadan, and they end up getting fatter because it's eaten all in one go and not spaced out during the day.

Can any muslims here admit via forum anonymity that sometimes they have found it too hard and broke their fasting?

Fasting is a hardship. I do not get why a religion would force their followers to do such things.

Also, if sickness and age are the only things to exempt you from fasting, how come Mesut Ozil was excused from fasting last year just so he could play in the World Cup?

I get the idea behind fasting for ramadan, but surely gorging on huge amounts of food at the end of dayllight kinda makes the fasting redundant when you've probably increased on what you normally eat during the day and haven't really understood true hunger?

Never managed a 6 pack when previously doing Ramadan :p

It can be difficult but it really isn't that hard after a week or so, whilst not for a month I often see people fast for the day for various cultural/dieting reasons at work. The last time I did it, what made it so great were the people I met and interacted with at the Mosque after breaking the fast. Enjoying great food with great company is a great experience, even more so after not eating/drinking for the day :p:D

Ok here goes...
Isn't the period another reason to pause? And long distant travel (something my father seemed to do in and around the month of Ramadan many years ago :p).
Correct, women on their menses do not need to fast and there are exceptions for heavily pregnant women and sick people (both physically and mentally)
Travelling is an interesting one. The idea is not to fast if travelling but as we believe there is great reward in fasting we should try and arrange our travels around the fasting times. Of course if there is hardship in this then you do not fast but give in the way of charity instead.

Unfortunately not :( I have lost weight in the past though and there are those that gorge themselves which kinda defeats the point imo.

I don't think I have broken a fast intentionally. Not bothered about forum anonymity as a Muslim I believe that sins are recorded anyway so bring anonymous on a forum won't change that!
Your are absolutely correct, it is a hardship that teaches so many things. Value food, patience, respect and understanding of those less fortunate. It also does wonders for the body ;)
Not sure about the whole Ozil thing, as a Muslim he should have fasted but there are some sects who believe that if it is too hard or impacts on work then it is best not to do it!

I 100% agree with this, it's wrong when people gorge themselves and really devalues what they should be doing.
Phew... Any more?

I guess the issue would be that they can gorge on food at the right time! How many do that? Are most people strict?

I personally don't do it and encourage my family to eat less and eat healthy rather than stuff faces.
One of the best things is observing a fast and opening it with a single date and glass of water/Milk. It's then when you truly appreciate the small things in life!

What timing do you use for sunrise and sunset currently? Mecca time, or do you work with the UK actual sunrise and sunset?

I will be using the UK timings.
The thinking behind using the different times is if it becomes unreasonable or you are unable to observe fasts during the times of your current abode. We are actually supposed to use the timings for the nearest Muslim country. For us guys in the UK that would be Turkey. The times for Turkey are around 5:30am to 8:30pm. At the moment we are looking at 2:45 am to 9:25pm not a MASSIVE difference to be honest...

Genuine question, is Turkey actually considered a Muslim country for that purpose? I always thought it was considered a secular country.

Fair point, I have always considered it to be historically a Muslim country as over 95% of the population are considered to be Muslims? Perhaps you're right and recently it has become a lot more secular - according to the media! But I digress..

Good luck with the fasting guys

is that really what you're supposed to be thinking of - that you can get 'more reward' out of it if it is a tougher year?

Apologies, I completely missed this!
In a way, yes! The while point of Ramadan as Muslims is to seek reward for it is a holy month like no other. If there is more struggle (or jihad as the correct term would be) then the reward would he greater as you have been tested to a higher degree.
