All the excitement of the Pi2 reminded me I have a Pi model B sitting at home doing nothing and thought that there must be something useful it could be used for.

When I initially got it I was thinking of using it as a media player but at the time XBMC was really slow and clunky on it and in the meantime I've got myself 3 now tv boxes which are doing that job nicely.

I was wondering about setting it up along with a USB hard drive to serve up my music collection but so far haven't found a really simple guide for doing so (any ideas anyone?)

Does anyone else have any ideas for something useful it could be doing for me, ideally running headless so it can be tucked away under my stairs hooked up to my router, also, ideally really easy to set up as I don't have a clue about Linux etc??

Any punters on this? I have a couple of 120Gb drives that were gathering dust, I could get an enclosure and hook them up to the pi so interested in this response.

FFS. I cancelled my order with RS components over the phone and the pleasant informed me this was not a problem. Fast forward to today and the RPi 2 turns up from them in the mail and I have been charged for it..... Incoming on the members market...

I run Raspbmc on my old rasberry b+

Can i still use Raspbmc on the new PI 2?..

Nopes.

Raspbmc is not available for the R-Pi2 yet.

OSMC is available for the R-Pi2, and works very well, although it is still in Alpha.
It's worth giving it a try as Sam announced he will no longer be updating Raspbmc.

Ah that's a shame,OSMC doesn't look all that great to me. :(

Change to Openelec

This is more what im looking for,It looks just like Raspbmc...So this is confirmed to work on the R-Pi2?

NEVAR!!!!

I used to be a big fan of Openelec, but then I grew up ;)

Have you tried it?
Config'd it?
Skinned it?

I installed it on a class 4 card last night, using stock config.txt, and OSMC is slick, very very slick.
I have a 32gb Samsung Evo coming tomorrow, I'll be using that and it will be glorious.

I've just got mine today after being out carded yesterday. CPC used a massive box to hold two small items.

I was surprised how much smaller the pi 2 and its case was compared to my OG 256 meg pi, and the overall presentation was much better than the pi 256, thou they don't include a certificate like they used to.

I've backed up my 32gb sd card and transferring it a 32gb microsd card at the moment. I've been looking into getting a class 10 card; but from the several pages that I've read so far, it shouldn't matter in terms of speed and a few have said class 4-6 are more reliable than class 10. I have a 32gb usb thumb drive for local storage on the pi and a network storage solution, so I'm going to give it a while to see if I do need a class 10 card.

Righto,

Well that's simple enough...

Install OSMC
Copy :-
avancedsettings.xml
sources.xml
passwords.xml

from userdata on raspbmc and place in userdata in OSMC then reboot.

I hit a snag when accessing the NFS shares from OSMC...
Code:
ERROR: NFS: Failed to mount nfs share: /export/Films (mount/mnt call failed with "RPC error: Mount failed with error MNT3ERR_ACCES(13) Permission denied(13)")

Checked the syslog on NobKitten,
Code:
NobKitten rpc.mountd[4098]: refused mount request from 192.168.1.15 for /export/Films (/export/Films): illegal port 41473
NobKitten rpc.mountd[4098]: refused mount request from 192.168.1.15 for /export/Films (/export/Films): illegal port 41477
NobKitten rpc.mountd[4098]: refused mount request from 192.168.1.15 for /export/Films (/export/Films): illegal port 41481
NobKitten rpc.mountd[4098]: refused mount request from 192.168.1.15 for /export/Films (/export/Films): illegal port 41485
NobKitten rpc.mountd[4098]: refused mount request from 192.168.1.15 for /export/Films (/export/Films): illegal port 41489
NobKitten rpc.mountd[4098]: refused mount request from 192.168.1.15 for /export/Films (/export/Films): illegal port 41493
I had to set the "insecure" flag on the NFS share and that little problem was solved.

The whole thing takes less than 15secs to boot @ 850Mhz on a class 4 card.

TBH guys, OSMC is bloody awesome.

Pleased to hear that... have fun! :)

While we are on the subject of Openelec, which I have just installed on my new Pi 2 also, could some nice kind person please tell me where to find the correct add-on to enable me to (1) watch live (BBC & ITV) TV and also (2) how to install BBC iPlayer?

From what I have read there appear to be more than a few different versions of 'add-ons' for iPlayer, and I obviously want to fine the correct one to work with the latest version of Openelec.

Thanks! :)

I'm trying to setup retropie and the instructions say:

###5.1 Get connected to the Raspberry pi
get the ip address of the pi using

$ ifconfig

look for the **inet addr: <i>\<value></i>** in the data output, this is your IP address. You can also get your IP address when you exit EmulationStation and enter the terminal. In the red text is your IP address.

Use your IP address to log into your pi using SFTP (ssh)

>Server address: \<RPI ip address><br>
>Username: pi (default)<br>
>Password: raspberry (default)

This will put you in the users folder. ie /home/pi/<br>
you should see 2 folders:

* RetroPie
* RetroPie-Setup

I can get the IP address but I'm not entirely sure where to enter the bits that start with ">". I'm terrible at command prompt type things :p.

Use PUTTY if on Windows - enter RPi ip address and click open, you'll be prompted for login username and password; or the SSH command within terminal if on Linux/OSX - use ssh pi@(RPi IP Address), it'll request password.

my pi 2 is finally up and running, and I must say it's amazing fast!
Don't get me wrong, I'm used to high end computers, workstations and servers and I use my old pi to run all my services for my home network, I was more than happy with the speed for what it did, but this pi 2 is crazy fast.

I would love to see a dual or even quad core with the option to add more memory. I have loads of small ddr/ddr2 memory sodimms I could use.

My Pi2 arrived Friday and I've not managed to get it running yet. No HDMI signal, get a solid red light and the green light flashes 4 times and then repeats. Tried a number of power supplies and hdmi cables but I've read that its linked to files on the the micro sd card - Multiple attempts at doing a full format using sd formatter and dropping NOOBS onto the card and the pi still hasn't shown any signs of life from HDMI. Got another sd card coming tomorrow so fingers crossed that sorts it.
