Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Went for it on CDKeys this morning, seemed a good enough saving over what I would consider too much on steam and it was literally the only reason I wanted a PS5! Surely that is good purchase logic, right? :D

Hopefully they have done a decent job of it, bit of a PITA about the AMD ray tracing stuff but seems to be 7000 series based problem if their notes are true so will be interesting to see how folk get on with 6000 series cards.

Wow that AMD RT news is a kick in the teeth. I'll probably skip this one as I played it on PS5 but I'll follow along for the tech breakdown. They made it sound like it'd only work on PS5 at launch but the min spec looks very scalable.

AMD have confirmed it's a driver issue^ Expect a driver update at some point :p - You'd think the driver would be updated before a game's release.
According to "FineWineTech" you're not to play it at launch. One needs to wait a few weeks/months/years until you play it. :p

So reading around it seems AMD don't do RTAO very well and as this was added at the end, this is gonna be the technical issue they note. Oops ;p

Looks to be a decent port scaling all the way down to Steam Deck. Disappointing to see the oddities when maxed out and the inconsistencies vs PS5. They'll no doubt be patching away in the weeks to come.

Absolutely love this game so far and it looks stunning, on a 4090 with all settings fully maxed out at 4K (even ray tracing), DLSS quality and frame gen on I'm staying at a locked 120fps and GPU usage ranges from 65% to 90% is the highest I've seen so far. Seems like an extremely well optimised game, majority of these PS ports are honestly putting some other devs to shame.

Why the hell do they recommend a 5900X at maxed out 4K I'll never know as my 5800X3D is handling the game effortlessly. A modern 8C/16T is way more than a enough CPU power for this game.

Very nice but what about the loading? Have you seen texture pop-in, stutters or any such like? Is the portal zipping smooth as butter?

Just had a quick go and immediate things I noticed in settings is that sometimes the settings don't remember. Also Full Screen is not Full Screen, it's Windowed Full Screen. Windowed mode is just labelled as windowed. So they got this naming convention wrong. I only noticed because my DLDSR res was not available until I set it to Exclusive Full Screen

Also I had to quit and load the game twice another time for it to load the game using the DSR resolution and other settings else it loaded at native 3440x1440.

The advanced graphics presets toggle only goes up to Very High, which is strange because various GFX options go to Ultra, so by selecting the max preset of Very High, you aren't actually maxing out the settings, so have to then manually increase those that do go to Ultra. unlike Cyberpunk, there isn't an indicator to tell you how many more settings beyond ultra each option has, which is annoying but hey ho.

With DLSS set to Quality at 5160x160 on a 4090 and 12700KF I was seeing the framerate bounce from above 60fps at a few times to 109fps other times, even though the scene hasn't changed which is weird, until I glanced at the RTSS overlay and saw that a lot of the time the GPU usage, even at 5160x160 was dropping below 90% whilst the CPU usage remained in the 40% range. So it looks like there's an optimisation issue with CPU utilisation resulting in the GPU having to wait around. It's not a CPU bottleneck issue because I am at 5160x160, and a 12700KF is more than beefy enough to handle anything.

I suspect we will be seeing optimisation patches fairly soon as also noticed numerous instances of frame drops and inconsistent performance when enabling frame generation.

Screens from those inconsistent notes above, keep an eye on the RTSS overlays... All of these are with Frame Gen off except the last one. I should add that changing to 3440x1440 (native res) didn't really change the framerate much or the frametime behaviour. A definite bug it would seem, but I will do a system reboot shortly just to be double sure.

What is going on here???

Why is this scene 68 fps??? Oh yeah that's why, the GPU is at 71%.,...

But when it is working fine it's very good, look at the CPU use below, same as above, the GPU is also 98% which is where it should be:

But then walk nearby somewhere and suddenly the GPU use drops again resulting in:

This scene was an eye opener, 15% CPU utilisation??? Multiple physical cores are either idling or parked...

And here we are back to normal, remember DLSS Quality only at 5120x2160 and when it's like this it runs so smooth:

Here the GPU utilisation dropped randomly again:

And lastly, this is the experience with Frame Gen enabled, whether it's at 3440x1440 or at DLDSR 5160x2160 doesn't seem to matter, the framerate just drops of there are consistent frametime stutters as below:

Oh I also got a crash to desktop at the start of the game too, which can be seen at the end of this clip:

Other than that, looks/great though and mouse and keyboard with the mechanics works well. There's no Raw input setting though and I did have to drop the x and y sensitivity to 4 from the default 5 as on the XM2we I found it too sensitive at 1000CPI and 1000Hz which is my 24/7 default everything.

Now, time to watch the DF review to see if what they found matches what I found.

Wonder whats causing those inconsistent frame spikes as I haven't come across that issue yet even in heavy combat with lots of explosions going on, haven't had a crash either. I do use exclusive full screen in these Sony ports otherwise things like changing the monitor refresh rate gets greyed out which is the same issue as the Spider-Man games. Still early yet and I haven't got that far so may come across issues later on.

HDR screenshots so they may not look right. HDR in this game though is stunning.

Out of interest are you using the very high preset or did you flick everything to max manually? And the RT draw distance to max too? I will do a quick run using just the very high preset which is what digital foundry was using too it seems at 4K and see if it still has the issues. If not then I suspect the issues are because of the manual override of some of those settings to beyond the very high preset.

The Ray tracing is messed up on PC

It's because they tried to increase the quality of Ray tracing, but they didn't go through and upgrade all the asset models to a higher quality so it results in some funny looking shadows and reflections

For example you have plants and bushes which have nice looking textures, but with RT on, they cast ugly Lego looking box shadows behind them because the actual asset in the game engine is a simple box

I set it to the very high preset initially then upped everything else that I could to ultra from the very start. Object range is also at the max of 10. Just tried it fullscreen instead of exclusive fullscreen and while my frame times are just as smooth it did significantly smooth out the frame rate line on afterburner.
