RC cars

I'd love to give my cars a run on the beach! Definitely something I need to try out this summer. No experience over what would work well though, but that thread linked above looks a good starting point. I think providing you go in expecting to need to do a decent clean afterwards it should be ok? Unless it's particularly fine sand I can't see it being more problematic than the general dust and grit you'd get all over the car driving around dirty track and gravel. Make sure you give it a good rinse to get off any salt water from metal components too.

Unless your willing to rebuild/teardown the cars and clean them after filling them with sand I would say this is a terrible idea :D
It will kill the bearings and the gears if you don't (unless you get a car with a well sealed drivetrain). It will be good fun though!

Maybe have a look at the Tamiya Monster Beetle, and the Tamiya Lunchbox.

Anything on the Tamiya CC02 chassis would probably be ok as well.

It's all a bit budget dependent TBH!

Edit: a lot of Tamiya's don't come with bearings if you looking at low to mid range kits. This might actually be advantageous for kids running on sand!

Edit2: Good thread here: https://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?/topic/104226-which-tamiya-for-beach-day-fun/

Thanks, I'll read through that thread :)

Thinking about it a bit more Pendine is one of those flat beaches were the sea comes goes out miles leaving quite flat, hard-packed sand, which might make things better?

Kinda wondering if it would need cleaning daily or could we abuse it for a week and then examine the damage :p

Lunchbox could work given they've got the two colours, the boys would probably like that. I remember wanting one when I was a lad too  also the buggies now I'm looking at them, I remember my mate having a grasshopper and being jealous :D

I guess with the first edit you mean those white plastic bushings where the 'hop-up' is an actual bearing?

Yep - that'll be it. I've got a DT03 which came with the plastic bushings, and tbh I'm still using them on the front wheels - still plenty of free movement in them. I've swapped out the gearbox bushings for bearings however after putting an overkill motor in it.
I think on hard packed sand, the 2wd buggiest will be awesome fun!

So realised I was kinda running out of time, kinda, it's my older nephews birthday next week and I'll be heading to see them this weekend so if I was to buy him an RC car had to order today, so I did :p

Used Modelsport as I've used them before many moons ago and picked up:
  • Tamiya Lunch Box Black Edition for him
  • Tamiya Monster Beetle for me :p
  • 4x 3000mAh Nimh 'Enrich Power' batteries (2 each)
  • 2x ET2069 Etronix 15KG Waterproof servos
  • SkyRC eN20 Charger
  • FlySky GT3C TX/RX (from eBay)
I've had one of the GT3C Tx/Rx's previously but gave it away like a n00b, so happy with that even though it's probably overkill.

But of the rest? Any glaring 'should really avoid' things on that list? And anything I've missed, pretty sure the cars come with motors/esc so adding the RX/Battery/Servo should be it?

Took ours out last night for the first time in ages, both worked fine, was good fun actually, had left it way too long.

I need a new body shell on my Hobao Hyper vse though it's getting pretty knackered.

My son has a Maverick Strada DT which I converted to Lipo and I gotta say for the money it's a fantastic car.

I took the Lunch Box down for me Nephew at the weekend and it seems to have gone down well, we got it built easily enough with the only bit I hadn't considered is that although it's the black edition with a black plastic shell the instructions still went over spraying it and some detail but I hadn't picked up any paints so we just ignored that bit :p

Running it around the garden worked nicely, they've both got a few cheapo rc cars/trucks but none of them work in the garden so think they enjoyed having something they could use there. Be good at the end of next month at Pendine :)

Also got the order from the younger nephew for an orange Lunch Box with a black roof

The one bit I might change is the servo I got above isn't that 'quick', so I might research and buy something a bit nicer for my Monster Beetle and put that one in the second Lunch Box.

Redid the body shell.

Bit gutted though, got it all done and went to do Talbot's Shoeglue and drywall tape method, but Shoeglue is so bloody expensive so I thought I'd just use general purpose adhesive.

What I didn't plan on is it melting the paint which is why it looks splodgy on the black parts, shame because it looked really nice.

Put a new spoiler on as the old one was tatty.

I looked into Shoe glue, but skipped it based on the price. Found a guide recommending using a clear grab adhesive like this one from Gorilla. Has worked pretty well and kept my Maverick in reasonable shape since applying it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gorilla-20...stal/dp/B085H33GPN?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1
I should have put this stuff on before half ruining the shell!

I'm not even going to bother next time.

I'm just going to put strips of gorilla duct tape on. I came to that conclusion last time and somehow forgot I'm between.

Shoo goo is expensive. Is you’re racing for real and want you body shell with a custom detailed paint job to last it’s worth it.

But yeah otherwise gorilla tape is a good alternative. Not as weather proof though. Which if your at a race meet you’ve no choice but to race whatever the weather.

That looks like some serious craftsmanship going on there, very impressed. Do you do all the machining yourself?

I used to make everything by hand but as demand increased I learnt CAD and now get the majority of stuff machined out for me. I still prototype stuff myself.

This for example I made by hand on my milling machine:

@Building Candy That looks great, one question I had with the shock linkages (the triangle bits, may have a different name) do you just make something that fits or do the whole engineering based on shock/springrates and travel and all that jazz? If the latter is that something you learnt at Uni/career or self-taught?
