RC Planes

That Hawk Sky looks very much like my AXN floater. Same wing and tail shapes, but about 100mm larger wing span. Mines had a few nose first landings, and a few cartwheels, but other than a few creases in the foam, it's as good as new. I've been trying to catch it instead of landing, but I only seem to be able to manage it when there's very little wind.

I just tried my AXN with a 6x4 prop last time out, and it can't half shift with that on. It certainly climbs better. I need to go back to the 5x5 now to see what that was like.

When I do eventually wreck it, I'm getting another that's for sure.

I'm afraid no sympathy from me there for using CA, we did tell you! Hopefully you can recover it, if not then it will be a case of a new airframe. Do they sell that one on its own without all the electronics etc?

It seems like everyone these days only gets artf's and rtf's! I really do enjoy a good kit build for my planes.

Edit - All the bits ordered to get my Dad's new plane going, a GWS E-Starter if anyone knows it. Should be good, I'm also looking forward to trying it. :p

Yeah I know, I wasn't looking for sympathy as I know I didn't deserve any. :p

I am slightly concerned that the wing will be off balance. It's certainly not the right shape anyway! It's higher on the side that has broken, when I lay it flat on the floor. I guess I'll just have to give it a go and see how far I get on. I'll check the balance and CofG many times before I dare take it out. I do want to get some decent footage onboard still... :o

Your plane is only 20cm shorter in wingspan Taggart but does look like it is far more nimble, I'm quite surprised.

Going back to having pull/pull on the servos for the rudder/elevator, where do I get the long metal rods to set this up? I've had a look on GiantCod but I can't think of what I should be searching for.

Do you think I could cobble something together with a carbon rod I have? They are stiff and extremely light...?

2 options.

1. What i did on the Hawk Sky is run new carbon tube(3mm,with a 2mm hole) CA a 2mm threaded wire on the end by inserting it up the hole and shrink wrapping it for extra seal. Clevis on the wire for adjustment. I used the 2mm wire then the thin wire from the original linkage for the servo end, however Ive started using these on the servo ends as it allows more adjustment(CAed the nuts once its in the right place) I've put a bit of the carbon rod as a guide and taped that to the tail so it doesn't waggle about. I've also dog legged the wire so its all pushing/pulling straight. On the hawksky these are run on the outside so was easy to retrofit and measure up.. Did a similar thing on the wings
Sorry for the **** pics:

2. What I've done on my spitfire. Run light weight servos on the tail it self and run servo extenders back to the rx. I was getting really sloppy linkages that resulted in a nose in crash. Shorter linkages = less to fail.

just ordered me some more stuff from hobbyking not plane related but i thought i might put it in here :P

saved myself about 15$ on shipping by doing 2 different orders lol.....

so anyone ordering in future from their might want to try splitting their orders if your going over one of the big shipping limits!

my first item was just under 1000gram and going up to the next level would have raised the shipping by a silly amount...

so i just did a second order for the other items that only weighed around 300gram and the shipping via royal mail on that was only 6$

Alex,
Are you storing your lipo's at 3.8v per cell?

arknor,
Thats worth remembering with Hobbyking, I might need to buy a better charger soon so might be ordering from them.

I have two orders in wait at hobbyking... that carbon quad frame is still holding the first one, over a month now :-/
This is, if I remove it I'm wasting heaps of money on the postage I already paid!

try talking to live suport about it.

how would you lose money on postage anyway? did part of the order already get dispatched? maybe you can get a part refund on the postage and full cedit for the qud copter frame

Well the order "edit" claims they don't refund the postage... only the item (and only in fake $ credits you then need to re-spend before they expire etc etc)

I'll see if I can talk to the live support...

Err, no... good point.

They haven't been used for a week or so now, so when should I discharge them for storage? Forgot that I needed to do that.

Gonna try and get out tomorrow so will probably discharge them tomorrow night. This weekend I will be digging footings for a shed.... :o ;)

Yeah talked to the online support, they more or less told me to **** off, I could change stuff "when you make a new order". They claimed "1-2 weeks" when I order the item over a month ago, then "end of feb" and now they say they don't know.

So that is more like IF I make a new order

Yeah you should, does your charger have a lipo storage setting?

Edit - Got all the stuff for my Dads Estarter today, impressive amount of accessories with the motor considering it was only £8.50! People have been getting decent efficiency, but I can't help thinking about rewinding the motor with looking at it. I already have some motor winding wire sitting about...

I can't say I've bothered to put lipos in to storage charge if I'm only leaving them for a week or two. Obviously if I knew I wasn't going to use them for a while I would but the odd week here and there?

Which motor is it saitrix? The 2212-06 that I'm also running? The wiring on mine looks all over the shop.

I got the new one the other day and fitted it and realised it wasn't the motor that's knackered, it was the gripping mount for the shaft that I had bent and put out of balance.

Weather is turning so I am either going to get out this afternoon or try tomorrow morning.

Keda 2830/14, Dr Kiwi has reviewed these on rcgroups and the numbers looked good for them so I thought I would give it a try. Thing is any motor around this price doesn't have neat winds, if you went and got a Hacker or something of that level then you would. On my flying wing I bought a cheap outrunner and rewound it myself to get exactly what I wanted and to increase the efficiency of it. Not the easiest thing to do, but if you take your time it isn't too bad. Plus there is a good feeling of satisfaction seeing the motor you wound first spinning. I'd definitely do it in the future. I will see if I can find a pic of my motor half wound to give you an idea how small and fiddly it was.

Edit- Found it!

try again? maybe the guy didnt understand the order had not been dispatched and thought it was an rma?

i know people who got "real" refunds not the fake credits

Ha, cool lawnmower. ;)

I will give the pull pull a go when I get some time... :o Not had a chance to do anything of late.

Well, yesterday I remembered that I had ordered a cable to connect my batteries in series....

So, I hook it up, and yes. It's actually quite terrifying. I did a quick test with scales and whilst trying as best as I could to not interfere with the results, only guiding the plane rather than contributing to the force, I stuck it on scales and it measured about 2.2kg of thrust.

:o

I was quite worried that the propeller would fly off and cut my jugular, as it was really quite terrifying, so gave it a rest. I did put it on the floor and whopped up the throttle for a brief second just to watch it tear across the floor like a madman.

So yeah, I know the motor won't be able to handle it, but I do have two of them and a 60amp ESC, so next time I go out I might see how it flies. I reckon it'll be easier to launch, if the motor can handle more than a few seconds of throttle. :D

EDIT... and here's a video:

Bit silly I know. :o

at bleeping last, the last item has arrived to unlock my order from HK.. That carbon quad frame was in stock for literally one hour, it's now back on backorder!
Now, how long until they ship ? the order has 3 green marks, but hasn't departed yet...

The lesson is that it is always a better idea to do multiple, small orders from HK than try to save on postage. it isn't even a good deal anyway. lesson learned!
