At their investor calls they mentioned the 40 series was meant to complement the 30 series and not replace it which is why pricing is the way it is.

Which would be the first time in gpu history that a new faster series wasn't meant to replace the old one. First the 4080 statement, now this. Nvidia really need to get better PR monkeys.

There was also that Jays2Cents video where he stop about Nvidia intentionaly artificially limiting stock to force higher prices.

Yeah, but the way pricing is going, even a x060 card is going to be £600+ (hell they initially announced the 4080 12GB 4070 at $900).

That's just not sustainable for the mass market, when that will get you a console plus a couple of games

I think that is part due to the buy in advance they did with TSMC. The node was always going to be more expensive than the Samsung deal. This is where it could pay off for AMD if they keep the costs down we just have to see in a couple of days time now.

Yeah, doesn't bode well for the future of PC gaming. It's alright for people on here as enthusiasts who can afford it, but most people aren't going to drop anywhere near that much on a Gpu when a whole console is half the price.
PC gaming is so healthy that it's the only thing still growing after the pandemic. Consoles are down this year.

I would start worrying when cheap GPUs are sitting on the shelves with nobody buying them. Expensive things selling out is never a bad omen.

Got a link to them stats.

Why is that surprising? Admittedly I didn't read the article but it seems like the smart thing is to wait to see what amd is offerring before getting wallet gouged by Nvidia

Pretty sure nvidia sent him a 3090 for his build last time around, i kinda doubt he's much to worry about in terms of his wallet.

At their investor calls they mentioned the 40 series was meant to complement the 30 series and not replace it which is why pricing is the way it is. Pricing will go down once AIBs get rid of their unsold 3000 series inventory. I expect 5000 series will have much more reasonable pricing at the low/mid-range.
Given the 4080 will end up around 40% faster than my 2 year old 3080 but cost 100% more it's not really a complement but rather an insult.

I could see 5000 series pricing being even worse than 4000 as they'll likely have a tonne of TSMC 5nm to shift in 2 years and considering they over ordered on ampere due to miners then I imagine they over ordered TSMC which they are now only drip feeding in because of the ampere oversupply.

I think the penny is starting to drop though now which is why OCUK have been sitting on 4090 stock for nearly a week now and even the 4090FE has been sitting in stock over on the continent for 3 hours now which is unheard of just a couple of weeks after a new GPU generation launch.
Ironically the penny dropping pushed prices up. Thanks Kamikwaze!

I thought the contrast in behaviour is interesting. He could pull up the couch cushions and find enough money to buy a 4090 and a fire extinguisher; and still have enough money to go on holiday. Yet he is waiting. He doesn't have FOMO and is more than happy to keep playing on his ancient, out of date, unusable, 3090 till all the options are available. If more people exercised this sort of restraint, GPUs would be a lot cheaper.

Good read. Liked the part where he has already purchased a zen 4 for gaming but still is being painted as a value buyer.. kinda contradictory but i get the celebrity pull when such evaluations are involved

You don't have to buy the absolute top end card to enjoy PC gaming. You could easily go for an RTX 3060 Ti or a 3070 and still get an experience which is leagues above the consoles.
I have a 3060ti and I had a 3070fe before I sold it for profit when market was mental...

They are good but the experience is definitely not leagues above my series x. In fact the series x is just way more user friendly than faffing about with my pc and its load times crap allover my Ssd specced pc.

I waited to post as this thread was carnage yesterday.

I think its telling that this generation, more than ever, AMD has such a compelling product line-up, it will be, by next April, better than it has ever been.

AMD have come on leaps and bounds in 5 years, a 2023 laptop with an AMD CPU+GPU will be a dream ticket for many. I could not say that before.

Even with the 290X and 390X launches, the AMD offerings were not very strong. A 7900XTX with 24GB Vram demonstrates real ambition to compete, I don't think AMD are simply hanging on in there, the architecture is superior, its just a case of whether they want to run the wattage levels needed to push the card hard. It does not look like the reference card is going to do that but, lets see what comes of the OC Formula, Toxic and the Liquid-Devil. Three tier 1 cards that Nvidia won't have this generation.

Indeed. I have a 3080 FE and the console experience (albeit on a 65" OLED) is equal or superior in many games.

PC gaming is a complete joke, top to bottom. £600-700 just for a decent 1080p machine, even without a monitor. Series X just destroys that value proposition.

One thing though, PC gaming has always been fairly expensive.

Agree with what your saying. But, the OLED telly is quite a hefty spend too.

2nd time, they released 20 RTX series alongside 10 series GTX, they then released new 10 series GPUs much like the 'new' 3060 getting released.
