They will have a superior product if they price similar to last gen as nvidia don't even have any 4000 series cards for under £1300 so AMD would be competing with ampere.
thats where the question "did amd plan for this 2 years before" comes in

and i also forgot to mention that amd didnt really have another option in how they went about disrupting with zen 1..
they were on the brink, an external anchor investor was brought on board, sold on to this strategic vision
even the context is different this time, amd has many options and theres no need to make highly leveraged "win all-lose all" bets anymore, the organization has evolved

No but do try to remember that the 3080 MSRP was $699, the 4080 MSRP is $1199, its near doubled in just one generation, that's something Nvidia did.

It's totally something Nvidia did they have been price setting for years, these trends have not come from AMD, not that AMD have done anything to fight it.

I think the April fools joke is nvidia thinking they can get away with charging double over their previous gen 80 tier while also using a heavily cut down die.

If AMD charged $900 for a card (RX 7800) with similar raster and 80% of its RT performance it would look good.

AMD could do that and rightfully claim the value argument, but this is against Nvidia charging double. if we accept the argument that these things are just more expensive to make now and AMD charged $749, that's $100 more than the 6800XT was, that would be awesome, that's AMD's Zen 2 moment.

Why not? the aggressive pricing worked for them with zen > zen 2 CPUs with intel sitting at almost 80% and AMD around 20% when zen came out. Also if AMDs cards are cheaper to produce then nvidia cannot cut prices as much as AMD and still remain profitable plus it means a tonne of ampere stock being written off which would hit nvidias profits hard.

This is the sort of aggression AMD need to show if they are serious about taking on nvidia, it was bold pricing initially that lead them to where they are in the CPU market today.

Yea but…

Why should AMD sell 40% cheaper than NV? :p:cry:

$900 for a 7800 with 12gb ram would not be good imo, since I wouldn't buy a 4080 16gb for that.

Well they used to but it didn't really work, people just used to dimiss it as AMD being the pound shop alternative, its why they have been trying to shake off this "Value Brand" image, its a bit like Mercedes Benz vs Lexus, a Lexus is just as good as a Mercedes Benz, but no one believes that.

Yep.

Some don't want to buy AMD cards they just want them to **** with Nvidia.

True.

However they have got away with nearly everything else since Turing. Including this 2K montrosity with an awful cheapo power connector.

I cannot imagine the uproar if this were a first-to-market AMD card...
I think the penny is starting to drop though now which is why OCUK have been sitting on 4090 stock for nearly a week now and even the 4090FE has been sitting in stock over on the continent for 3 hours now which is unheard of just a couple of weeks after a new GPU generation launch.

its been over a week on the OCUK stock, there is an outlet which had stock from release all the time.

there are still delusional people think this release will be sold out in an instant and everything will be scalped. madness

zen4 cpus didnt increase in price despite the switch from 7nm node to 5nm. Heres hoping 7000 series wont either above the previous gen. 999 for 7900xt top dog, 799 for the cut down 7900/7800xt.

Now is the chance for amd to come out and kick nvidia square in the ball while they're already down with the debacle infused 4000 series launch. Cherry on top
would lisa su holding up a EVGA 7900xt FTW on stage

Not like AMD were in a position to fight it for the longest time. And even if they do fight it, what does it get them? People still by and large go for nvidia cards because the "bUt MuH DrIvUrZzZ" rhetoric is still out there and people are still dumb enough to believe it.

For an absolute top end I could deal with £900, but for a x800 or x080 class I agree it's still crazy.

Yeah, doesn't bode well for the future of PC gaming. It's alright for people on here as enthusiasts who can afford it, but most people aren't going to drop anywhere near that much on a Gpu when a whole console is half the price.
