If I was him I'd have a 4090 system downstairs, a 4090 system upstairs, my 1 year old would have a 4090 system, then I'd get 3* 7900XTX systems to put next to them, and I'd have 2 88" OLED screens in my living room too.

True. For some reason I just ignored that. Arguably it does add a fair bit to the experience.

However, even just a console box is much cheaper than a quite basic PC.

I say that tongue in cheek as plenty of PC gamers also forget about the spend on displays. Many have got the C2/LG's or them widescreen AW displays which are over a grand which can be more than what the cards cost. :)

Consoles are a complete no go for me now, when released they looked and worked great but as shown with recent titles, we're getting back to the 30 fps era where various graphical settings are being sacrificed as well as the resolution. Given all the talk about FSR and consoles being amd powered, I'm surprised this still hasn't been more widely adopted by consoles, think there is only one title to date, scorn?

- no 21.9 support (game changer for me)
- don't have the hardware grunt to provide ray tracing at 60+ fps, let alone some recent non RT titles
- high refresh rate gaming, sure a very limited selection of console games have 120fps/hz mode but then graphics are sacrificed considerably

With gamepass and sony bringing their exclusive titles to pc, there is even less of a reason to get a console now too.

For people who don't have a pc already then yeah to buy "new" and all the parts, it is expensive and that is where a console is great. I only buy when I need/want an upgrade and only if the value is there, same with any product I get though, my LG 55e7 back in 2017 worked out to be £899 after cashback offers, my AW QD-oled worked out to be about £680 after voucher codes etc. were stacked and so on.

You're basically complaining that a mass produced hatchback can't compete with a track car

Pretty much

This is always the way with PC vs console though, new consoles come out and look fantastic, have the edge on pc for value etc. then a couple years down the line, start to show their age and this is where pc shows its strengths by being able to drop in upgrades when required, with console you don't have any say in that, only choice is to make do until the refresh consoles come out, which will cost more than the normal versions, in this day and age, I imagine the next consoles will probably be pushing £600-700+ too, obviously still be better value than buying a complete "new" pc though but then in another 2+ years time, we'll be back to the first scenario again.

Major strength here being - You're able to spend more money on it..

That's why you're not him :D

Most of average people's brains are ruled by consumerism.

aha yeah it's that tricky bit as well for the game devs, be a bit lazy with engine optimizations or just turn up the eye candy a bit more then 60fps is out the window. There's been a few recent games with obvious engine issues like Gotham Knights

Isn't that the same for any hobby?

If you're happy with 30 fps, lesser graphics, 16.9 then yeah sure, fire away and enjoy your gaming.... but as shown by this forum some enjoy the benefits that pc gaming provides, which is probably the same reasons why you are on this forum and have a gaming pc too......

It wasn't mean to be a serious comment...

Without getting into an argument, I will say this, you're not really comparing the capabilities of two types of oranges here anyway, one is a one-time set cost system, the other isn't.

Agree with what your saying. But, the OLED telly is quite a hefty spend too.
It is but a big TV tends to be something the whole family would benefit from when using Netflix or watching movies etc.

Let's not forget a lot of pc hardware types have been using LG oleds for monitors for a while too. So the fancy screen outlay isn't console exclusive. Infact anyone spending £1000+ on gpus really should be using £1000 screens to back them up.

PC gaming is so healthy that it's the only thing still growing after the pandemic. Consoles are down this year.

I would start worrying when cheap GPUs are sitting on the shelves with nobody buying them. Expensive things selling out is never a bad omen.

Where's your source for this? It's also a strange point to push because it's surely only natural for consoles to peak early in their cycle then for sales to gradually slow once they are in peoples homes?

Sony FY22Q2 Earning Report:

-First-party software sales: 6.7m
(7.6m last year; lowest of the year)

-PS+ numbers: 45.4m vs last year of 47.2m. (by far the worst sign, playstation active userbase actually shrinking with PS4 users not only not buying PS5s, they are leaving the platform altogether)

-OI margin: ~6% margin (Last year was 12.8%)

-PS5 Units: 3.3m so no change (LTD: 25m)
(Last year was 3.3m)

and no every console gen starts slow and sales accelerate over time.

PS4 sales in the same time frame 30m vs 25m of the PS5 while gaming has grown a lot since then. PC gaming has absorbed all the growth with Steam rocketing in popularity by 3x since that PS4 era.

Could some of this not be linked to cost of living uncertainty and people cutting back on subscription models in same way Netflix has seen reduced numbers lately.

How do you see this going. Are you implying that ps5 and xbox series x are doomed?

I see ps5 is available by invitation only on Amazon right now. If demand is down then surely that ain't right?

Nevermind, I've seen your source

Ignoring just your hand picked lines, the extra detail adds more sense to it all.

Even Valve are socked at how the Steam Deck has taken off.

Sony might like to think about that, they used to be in this market, i have no doubt AMD are ready to talk yet another custom chip.... they have them in Samsung Phones and Tesla Cars now. :D

It doesn't mean anything long term but if you're hoping for cheap GPUs because PC gaming is dying I have really bad news for you.

Oh nah I'd never see that because nvidia have a choke hold over the master race.
