RDNA 3 rumours Q3/4 2022

If they get ray tracing or even some mild path tracing in they will definitely increase their market share. Growing up pc gaming I remember looking at ray traced images and thinking, wow that is truly the next step in graphics. Now we have real time ray tracing! AMD should really be focusing on this.
They should also get a hardware video encoder on their cards, again they'll increase their market share.

I'm not aware of any specific reason why standard RT cores can't do path tracing. They are incredibly similar its just that path tracing uses some cheats that full ray tracing doesn't.

From what I've understood path tracing comes at a significant performance cost, the 30 series does it around 30 fps from the video I watched. Even ray tracing doesn't fully ray trace, it uses a small sample size of rays hence the noise seen without nvidias noise reducing algorithms.

But, wait. If it's really the same, why does path tracing have a different name, and what benefit does it offer game programmers? Path tracing differs with ray tracing in that instead of following lots of rays, throughout an entire scene, the algorithm only traces the most likely path for the light.

My guess is that Nvidia will use the Tensor cores or some other unique cores for calculating the probable route of the light ray.

Yes! I think they may have even mentioned that in the video I watched, they will likely use tensor cores for it.

Sounds to me like AMD are going all in on efficiency/power consumption. Hopefully they are also putting some focus on AI/ML and RT, their reveal will tell all i.e. if they don't address that/avoid it like they did with rdna 2 show, you know it won't be good :p

I thought that too, however, based on this thread, I don't think that will matter if amd smash nvidias RT, people seem to care more about rasterization, vram and PE (and that's on an enthusiast forum.... so can't imagine the casuals/average joes, especially those on weaker/lower end gpus caring for next gen/future tech such as RT), all those areas where amd have the advantage "overall" yet rdna 2 still has sweet f all market share if steams survey is anything to go by.

With regards to video encoder, iirc, there is a new almighty industry standard coming out, which supposedly will be better than nvidias nvenc?

edit: I'm so dumb, I didn't even realise AMD had ray tracing... sigh. Guess we'll see how much they have improved tech! Video encoder side it is rumoured they will have hardware av1... not sure how the recently updated x264 rdna2 performs.

i have been following the launch hype, it seems this time around nvidia is pretty confident with the way they are segmenting their gpus, with rumors talking about the possibility of ad104 based 4080s... i doubt if amd has anything stacked against the 4090, whats the ocuk consensus?
 
RDNA3 hitting almost 4GHz? Bejeebus, if true.

Based on the leaks regarding Nvidia clock speed, I would have been surprised if AMD weren't getting close to approaching 4GHz. I suspect the minimum base clock we will see, will be around 3GHz. With a cut down chip of some description boosting to 3.8GHz.

Nobody knows. Its hard to really say if Nvidia is confident or just underestimating AMD or are scared of them. They are rumoured to be hitting some stupidly higher power draw on their cards.
 
Well, your 6800XT clocks to about 2.4Ghz? if its about 3.8Ghz that is +60% on the clocks, should result in about a 50% performance gain.
AMD did this before essentially with RX series, they made the tesselators better performing and simply clocked the cards above 1300mhz, so essentially stripped down compute of the R9 390 but the clock speed difference evened the GPU out in gaming performance, focusing head first on video game performance, it worked.

Drivers were great too because GCN was already really well established.
