Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4, Xbox and PC Hopefully)

OK. I'll admit that some of the main story characters are a bit "hard to like" . Dutch is annoying. Not sure why they went with that angle. What does he actually do? ((I'm still only at chapter 2 so no spoilers there please)

The open world stuff is still blooming epic though.

(Can't help feeling I might get bored by the whole thing by the middle of next week but hey- it was fun whilst it lasted)

Light entertainment?

Wot. Like the X Factor, Strictly or the Apprentice?

Not denigrating - it's what the other half does whilst I'm roaming around in a rather good rendition of how America used to be.

People moaning it's too slow? Jeesus. Take yourself back to the day it's actually set in.

Sit back. Relax. Soak it up. It's not a frag fest.

I'm not expecting Quake, but I would like something a little more engaging...some kind of challenge that requires me to use the buttons and sticks on the controller to beat something, rather than just being an armchair director of a good Western.

It's just sitting in an awkward middle ground between being a great movie, and a fun game. If I could just put the controller down and let it play itself I think I'd enjoy it more at the moment.

The Last Of Us nailed the cinematic game experience, it has the great story, dialogue, visuals and cinematic feel, but it's glued together by solid and fun stealth action gameplay.

I get what you mean there exactly. I just did a mission for example where the objective was to sneak in somewhere and steal something... So I started with the objective 'get inside building'. I scouted the place and climbed on to the roof and tried to go through a window. None of them opened. Turns out there is only one entrance to the place, and when i entered it the objective changed to 'go upstairs' Instead of doing that I went back out the door and a message pops up saying 'you must return to the place'. Turns out I had to do everything exactly as they wanted me to. All I really did was follow instructions. It is such a decade-old approach to gaming that most good games have moved on from. A good game would have simply had the objective 'steal item' and left you to it.

This is only inside the actual missions though outside of them you have freedom to an extent. The game seems at odds with itself in that regard.

Started this yesterday evening and only just finished chapter 1, am i rushing it? :D
No :p I’m at the point now where I just want game closure lol. Think my save says 72% done.

Also think because I’ve had the week off work I’ve burnt myself out on it a bit too which doesn’t help.

It's basically a simulator, and an incredibly boring one at that. They could have done so much with the story but ultimately it's a snooze fest. I just feel annoyed I got the digital version and not the physical as I would have traded it in otherwise.

Same feeling here.

The first was like being in a Western movie. This is some sort of weird Midwest survival game. For a 2018 game, some of the mechanics are archaic. Failing missions because you strayed from the path, or approached the problem from a different angle is just stupid. I haven't seen that in an open world game for years (possibly since GTAV).

It's not awful. But it's not as good as it should have been, and not worth the hype or the level of praise that's lavished on it. AC: Odyssey remains my favourite game of the year (I just wish I had the wildlife from RDR2).

I agree that some or the mechanics(and especially the overly long animations) are tedious at times, but I've never once found it boring. I have been engrossed.

On another note, anyone else have no idea their weight is being tracked?... I just looked in the character tab and it said underweight. Erm OK!

It's nothing to do with dumbing down or anything like that. Some of the mechanics are unnecessarily slow. Take what I said about only being able to walk whilst in camp- you enter camp and want to get to your bed, it is a straight line to it, you can see it, you need to get there to change clothes for example. Instead of letting you run there, it forces you to walk slowly towards it. Now there is no gameplay in that straight line, you are just pressing forwards. It is the same with all of the slow animations.... Yes I've seen the skinning animation 50 times now, just get on with it. Hitching the horse is another one(tbh, there is never a need to hitch a horse anyway) press and hold the button, then a 5 second animation plays out every time.

It is certainly in no way a case 'dumbing down' . ... Its just an animation playing out, no extra gameplay.

I think it's an immersion/realism thing. While I find it a little annoying at times, I see why they might do it. When was the last time you got out of you car and ran to you front door? (Aside RDR2 release day perhaps)

Have 2 separate manual saves and use one for fallback if needed.

Same here. Although, there are times I'm not in a mission and it wont let me save. Anyone else seen that? Any ideas why?

Usually when you cant save in free roam it means some map/quest markers still haven’t been loaded for your next objective and also that it’s probakly auto saving.

Also. You can’t save if there are enemies around you. Like if you bump into someone too rough. Or bounty hunters are in your area.

Yup, it affects your stats too (i think underweight gives you more stamina but less health, and vice versa for being fat!)

Just failed another mission over something ridiculous. Pulled up at a saloon, hitched my horse, rented a room. Got up in the morning, grabbed my horse, went to a mission start location. When I arrived, I realised I'd grabbed the wrong horse. Started heading back to get mine. Mission Failed. Nothing had really started; I'd simply been told where my companions can be found.

Nonsense.

Nothing more irritating than a gang member that keeps dying half way through a shootout. :P Or chasing someone down on a horse and killing them by mistake to have to do it again.

For the life of me I cannot get into this, which is annoying. I adored the first one.

EDIT: Outside of mission, how the hell do you earn money? Robbing someone earn practically nothing, can't do bounties because I have one on myself and don't have enough to pay it off. Silly me thinking a mask would stop you from getting a bounty.

I don’t wanna spoil anything, but the first two chapters I was more or less broke. The money comes thick and fast later on.

End of chapter 4 is awesome. I'm on to chapter 5 now.

I kind of forgot I was not even 50% complete on the story. I was expecting things to wrap up, but the story is still twisting and turning!

started chapter 5.
I've been holding up on my controller for about 15 minutes now.

Immersive!

I haven’t played this today; I was about to and then a mate who I haven’t spoke to since May invited me to Xbox live party. Again, disnt want to play Red Dead without giving it my full attention.

I don’t think i’m ‘Hooked’ yet; i’m Enjoying it of course, and the game is stunning. I’ve been told it takes a bit of time to get going, which could make sense as i’m Still very early in the game as I’ve spent a lot of time playing but not doing story missions.
