I saw Back To Earth part 3 last night. Terrible, desperate last-ditch attempt by Naylor at being clever. Embarrassing.

And you know why Back To Earth didn't work? Because if there were any consideration through series I-VIII that this was the way things were going, there would have been indications. Hints, allusions. 'Mistakes' in their reality, almost like a malfunctioning holosuite. But no, nothing. This idea has come out of nowhere to wrap up the whole lot and make it look lilke some piece of televisual genius.

Bringing Coronation Street into it was the final piece of direness to top off an already healthy pile of compost. If Rob Grant were still writing for the series, I'm sure this would have gone a very different way.

What? What did I-VIII have to do with this

The last episode was more enjoyable, though i agree missing canned laughter.

Did it ever explain how the crew were in 1 piece after the ship got devoured by the virus at the end of series 8?

Can't beat some of the Series 5 and 6 episodes!

I watched the first episode when it was out, then caught up last night.
Found it odd that there was no "recorded laughter" and some of the humour didn't seem right or too obvious.

There were some bits I did enjoy and thought "that's just classic red dwarf". Like when they return to earth, all come bumping through the dimension rift - except cat who lands perfectly and does his "awwwwwwww yeah yeah yeah" and shuffles off the screen :D

Blade runner rip off was a bit annoying, could have come up with something slightly original like the idea of the second despair squid but it did seem a little weakly put together.

I think the majority of fans would like it still, as overall I did. Although you have to expect it to not be as good as the originals.

Watched a bit but couldn't bear to tarnish my memories any further.

IMHO, it began going downhill from series 4 and bar a few notable but infrequent later highlights never really recovered. Would rather it had been left to rest peacefully in our memories than be resurrected in a form as sub-standard as this looked from the bit I saw.

Maybe I should have given it more of a chance, I dunno. Or maybe I'm just old and miserable now...

That's what he wanted you to say.

Doug Naylor said specifically said there would be no series IX, but there would be a series X, saying something along the lines of "it may not make sense now, but it will do".

Personally I couldn't give a monkey's anymore.

Interesting. Personally I thought every series up to six was great. What didn't you like about 4-6? I will agree that 4, though not bad per se, was the weakest of the sextet.

Well, in my opinion the first 3 series were strong because of the great character dynamic between Lister and Rimmer. The play off of these two being trapped alone together, hating each other but also needing each other to keep going through life (or holo-life, I guess). The cat was in these series genuinely like an another species, not quite a part of crew, just like... a cat, I guess.

Holly was great in these series too. I really liked Norman Lovett in that role and thought he was well-used. Hilly was never as good, and imo Kryten was never quite an adequate replacement for the original Hol.

From about series 4 onwards, it seemed to me that the writers had run out of ideas as to how to truly play of this dynamic between Lister and Rimmer. Their characters became more one-dimensional (Rimmer was just pernickity and officious, Lister was just a dirty slob), and the cat seemed to degenerate into a source of elaborate one-liners and incidental situational comedy.

It had its moments, I reckon, but it was never the same show for me. Looking at series 4 onwards, the only entire episodes I liked were Quarantine, Back to Reality and I guess Gunmen (though I also think Gunmen tends to be over-rated).

Just my onions, like...
