And you know why Back To Earth didn't work? Because if there were any consideration through series I-VIII that this was the way things were going, there would have been indications. Hints, allusions. 'Mistakes' in their reality, almost like a malfunctioning holosuite. But no, nothing. This idea has come out of nowhere to wrap up the whole lot and make it look lilke some piece of televisual genius.

Did it ever explain how the crew were in 1 piece after the ship got devoured by the virus at the end of series 8?

IMHO, it began going downhill from series 4
That, as well as how the Red Dwarf shrunk back to normal size, was all explained in Season 9.

Interesting. Personally I thought every series up to six was great. What didn't you like about 4-6? I will agree that 4, though not bad per se, was the weakest of the sextet.
