Relocation to Spain Experience

Applying for EU citizenship and passport. We have all our certificates, some needed to be Apostilled at the UK foreign office and then translate.
About to hand in all our documents once it all done apply for the EU passport and we are off.
Don't forget your diesel generator.... :)

Just for help for anyone else. The mortgage process here is baffling!

Applied mid last year but had to wait for the building licence to be granted which was understandable. That happened in November. We then restarted the application and had to get a valuation done. Given we only have a plot of land and a contract from the builder i'm not sure what's being valued but a nice €600 bonus for the valuator! They gave a sufficient price around mid January and we then again had to submit updated payslips. Pretty much a monthly process since this began!

We then had to go into the bank to sign the mortgage as nothing is done online over here. Then today we had to go to a notary to explain the terms of the mortgage to us and sign to state we understood them. This it seems is law in Spain to create work for notaries! But then we have to go back to the Notary in a weeks time to formally sign the mortgage with someone from the bank.

Just such a painful process when we've been used to the UK where everything is done online.
Yeah spanish bureaucracy is a nightmare where my father lives theres a former solicitor from the UK who acts as a "fixer" or go between to negotiate all the red tape or you'd never get anywhere. When I due retirement I'm off as well wish I could afford to go now this country is sinking faster than a leaky tub!

Don't forget your diesel generator.... :)
You'll probably need them here soon enough  it'd probably be cheaper than the regular electric too here like everything else the price we pay here for services is frightening.

Yeah we both have this as i needed it for my wifes Autonomo (self employed) tax submissions and also for applying for the Beckham Law regime.

I keep trying to get the Cl@ve pin working but always get errors!
Cl@ve pin is a waste of time imo and slowly bring deprecated. I used it for about 5 years but now I just use a digital certificate, much easier to use! I got the certificate as I have a permeant residents card (TIE), but I think you can still get one even if you have NIE.

It depends on where you're going. I lived in Madrid for years with no, to little Mosquitoes

.
Question can you name some nice areas in or around Madrid. Like to do a property search and compare prices with Barcelona.

Noticed, that today marks exactly a year to the day that we arrived in Bilbao. Spending far too long in the port at customs. Never did manage to recover the import costs. Just seems to be no guidance anywhere and didn't seem worth paying someone for the relatively small reclaim.

Has been a great year, and no reason to look back. We've seen a couple houses pop up where i think we'd have been interested if we'd not gone with the build. Certainly would've been cheaper, albeit with some compromises. Still no regrets on that front, even though we've still not got planning approved (should be the next week or so apparently as it's getting to the deadline where they either reject or it's auto approved!)
It feels that a lot of Brits are moving over to Spain.

Spain and Portugal publish lists of required specialisms. Just check there to see if you're "on the list".

However, that still doesn't negate the fact that if you want to be employed you will need to find a sponsoring company. They need to prove nobody else in Europe can do that job. Not easy

edit: cross posted with Martynt74
What's the best site to look at for high demand jobs. Is there some gov site that allows me to search.

Shudder….

All that toing and froing of documents that need to be translated and apostilled is a nightmare.

I had to get a new passport after getting married in order to get my residency & the application took 3 months because of the passport office continually asking for yet more documentation each time I sent something they’d asked to see. Problem is that there’s a strike in customs here & it takes up to 2 weeks to send via DHL and up to 4 to receive.

So, by the time I finally got it, my criminal record check had expired as it’s only valid 3 months here & hence the saga continues.

When I lived in Spain 10 years ago, you could just get one by applying to the embassy/consulate in Madrid but it seems passports can only be issued by the UK passport office these days.

I am going the other way, I hope it will be fine. IAM going to the consulate next week to make sure I have everything in order before I apply. It is going to cost me a fortune to get my education equivalent document for Spain. 160 euros for each document, probably going to cost me up to 1000€.

I feel sad that in a way that I am leaving the UK. But I feel that everything in this country does not work and it is a shame this country has been ruined over the last 14years. I just don't want to wait any longer, I feel it is going to take decades to repair the damage.
The country is in economic decline, and too many people have taken advantage and assisted in the downfall of this country.

I really feel that many will be in rentals for the rest of their lives while IHT will strip people of any hope having a home.
Also the attack on the disabled and the poverty welfare system which pays out nothing. The complete failed NHS. High taxation, including new ways to strip people from there earnings and etc...

The income tax banding has not kept up with inflation for many years, wages are pretty awful now.

I also feel sorry for some of the good people in this country but life is too short.
Plus there is a shortage of our skill in this country.

it's on the Spanish government website somewhere.

I'm a bit confused about what it is you're doing though. As an EU citizen you can work in whatever field you want.

However, if you're applying for residency in Spain as a UK national then you need an appropriate visa. Off the top of my head there's the Non Lucrative (effectively retiral based on having a set minimum of financial resources) , the student visa, a self employed visa , a key worker visa and a digital nomad visa. All come with certain conditions and have varying degrees of difficulty in acquiring. Quite a bit of information here

loads here but not very user friendly

Just as a general comment I disagree with many of your reasons for wanting to leave the UK and you won't find Spain any better. There is minimal welfare system, families are expected to look after themselves. The medical situation is fantastic in Spain but again, you're expected to do much of the work for any inpatients i.e. physical nursing. Taxation is higher in Spain for normal workers with less allowance than the UK. The grass may not be greener if you haven't done your homework.

I haven't got the EU citizenship yet, and wanted to see which jobs are in high demand.

What do you actually mean by EU citizenship? Are you a EU national who has rights or a UK national looking to settle in another country. Theres a big difference

That not totally correct, but if Iam paying for tax and can't get access to NHS. The tax rate is not that different. The cost of living makes up for the difference, this is why I am inclined towards Madrid.
Then move to Gibraltar eventually.
There is also talk about reducing income tax in Spain .
Taxes in the UK are going to increase, the UK is in a very big mess and the full extent has not been realised yet.
They have run down everything in this country, the problems are in all areas.

No I am not a EU national but in the process of becoming one. One of my parents has European family history.

It's crazy how high my spirits are lifted just by it being a dry bright day in Scotland. I was absolutely miserable over Winter (Probably suffer from that SAD syndrome) If Spain has similar issues to the UK but the climate is 10x better and I had the resources. I'd go for it like Tram and others in this thread have <3

You are miserable weather is one and too many rules and penalties.
Life is to short to stick around hoping for change. I feel that the UK is restricted in some ways. Yes, the weather does change your view on life.
There are things that I just can't say on forums, but I dislike the change and attitude in this country

The one major downside is an incompetent socialist government, normal service will be resumed by 2029.

I doubt that, the whole foundation has changed and I believe it cannot recover or be reversed in our lifetime.
