Retro console and games thread

The BVM-20E1E is a 1000 TVL set from what i can remember. If you can, GET IT, GET IT, GET IT :D If you like the sharp scanline look it will look amazing! I would love one.. just can't bring myself to spend the money.

A few things with the BVM. They may need terminators on the BNC RGB pass through output sockets. You might find you get a overly bright picture if you don't use the terminators. I think they need to be 75ohm terminator plugs.

Try and find out how many hours the unit has been used for. This can be found in the service menu, and also if you can check the geometry. On the BVM's Channel 94-99 i think hold test patterns to test colour and geometry etc. If when running a grid test patten check the picture isn't slightly rotated. This means messing with the yoke on the tube.. and that can seriously KILL you if you don't know what your doing. I would look for another set if the picture is rotated. Geometry can be adjusted in the service menu so some issues can be rectified.

Regarding geometry.. be prepared to spend a while setting it up.. it will be worth it in the end. The service manuals are on the net for the sony range of PVM's and BVM.

Right cables and Sync. Basically you have C Sync, (or Raw Sync as it is also know) and Composite Video Sync. Basically Raw sync is the pure sync signal being fed to the sync input on the monitor.

Composite video Sync is the Composite video signal with the Sync signal combined. Usually the Yellow plug on the AV leads. What a Sync Cleaner does is strip the Composite video signal away to leave just the Raw sync signal.

How sync is delivered all depends how the System and Cable are wired up. I think PVM's & BVM's don't need a sync cleaner as its built into the monitor. I've never had and issue with sync so a sync cleaner is not usually need with a PVM.

There is a steep learning curve but when you get your head around things it will become easy and very satisfying when you have a wicked picture!

As i say i'm always willing to help and will try my best to answer and questions.

I hope that has help you understand things a bit more.

Thank's a lot that was extremely helpful appreciate it, gotta get me a bvm now :D

I just finished modding my Core GRAFX the other night.

Enjoy your Pc Engine this is my collection, love it. This is my second collection the first i sold then decided it was a bad and idea re-purchased most direct from Japan. My big mistake was selling the Super Grafx 1941 which will now cost me an arm and a leg to replace. Need a few more titles like Hellfire cd and Darius Plus but have been to busy to get it out and set it up.
You must get Devil Crash and Parodius best engine games ever made. This link we help you lists all the games reviews and in-game shots and video.

That's a great collection right there mate. I'd love a Duo-R. Maybe later on down the line i will pick one up. I'm really really enjoying mine at the moment. I only own 6 games, one of those being Super Star Soldier. 2 min Caravan mode is so addictive!

My next game i want to pick up is Download. A horizontal shooter with a Cyberpunk theme. I do love my shmups!

Thanks for the link, i will be sure to check it out.

Well I just got back from my vacation to Osaka, Japan and while my visit wasn't for game hunting I did manage to grab a few items from a couple of retro stores at prices way lower than eBay.

The shops were amazing, a retro gamers dream. So many nice consoles, Famicom Twins, and Neo AES's everywhere!

Nintendo Pickups:

Some Sega Dreamcast love, including a limited edition Mega Drive themed VMU:

Japan only blu-ray releases of Resident Evil and Darkstalkers. I hate digital only games so I was happy to find these, black label too:

Super GameBoy 2 in action :)

Some Rockman World 5 in its SBG Glory

And waiting for me when I got home:

Sadly there weren't any arcade PCB shops about so no MVS games for me this time.

What's the difference between a super gameboy and super gameboy 2?

I'm after the limited edition Darkstalkers PS1 controller which was a purple sega saturn controller with a playstation connector at the end of it made by Hori. I keep saying to myself; If I stop buying games for 6 months/a year I could go over and buy the games I want for cheaper.

What's the difference between a super gameboy and super gameboy 2?

The Super Game Boy 1 was actually overlocked so games ran a fraction too fast, the music was slight sped up. The SGB2 was a Japanese exclusive, came in a cool clear blue shell and was released in 1998, so quite late in the life of the SNES. It had the correct clock speed so games ran exactly has they were meant to be, lots of new colour pallets and borders, and a link cable port for transferring data to an actual Game Boy for Pokemon trades etc.

Really pleased this morning. A couple of weeks ago I won an ebay job lot of 'electrical items' for £6. Along with a load of other non-gaming bits and pieces, I spotted a Game Gear in the pictures along with a Micro Machines 2 cart.

When I picked it up it was clearly in a bad condition after being left in a garage for many years. It wouldn't turn on from batteries, and instantly turned itself off when trying it with a Mega Drive power supply.

With a soldering iron in one hand and a fistful of capacitors in the other I spend a couple of evenings doing a full cap replacement on the mainboard and the power sub-board. At least half the original capacitors were bad and stunk of fish when removed. But eventually it sparked back into life!

After getting it up and running I found that there was no sound from the main speaker, and only a really quiet sound from the headphones in the right ear only. I've just spent the morning replacing the capacitors on the sound sub-board and reassembling it. Voilà! One Game Gear brought back from the dead!

Good job ZF. Can I ask is that what you typically do when you recondition old gear?

For example Ive got an Atari Lynx that doesn't power up. Tempted to crack it open and start investigating, problem is I don't know where and I don't have access to even a basic multimeter!

It depends on the console. Sega we're notorious for using the cheapest capacitors they could find in all their consoles and cheap capacitors start to fail or leak after a few years. That means that most non-working Sega consoles can be fixed by removing the capacitors, cleaning up the board with something like IPA 170 (leaked capacitors can make quite a mess and can corrode the board if it's not cleaned off), and resoldering in new, more reliable capacitors.

No matter what the console, you'll find that someone on the internet has had the same problem and fixed it. I've never tried to fix a Lynx, but I'm sure someone on here has - http://atariage.com/forums/forum/13-atari-lynx/ :) They'll probably know what's wrong with yours and how to fix it.

If you give it a go then spend some time practicing how to solder first. There's some good tutorial videos online and it's a useful skill to have. And make sure you use flux otherwise it becomes very difficult! :)

Thats pretty cool well done, ive got a game gear but mine has the same problem turns on then off, keep meaning to send it off to get fixed but never got around to it.

Picture doesn't look too bad with that device. How does sonic look, being a fast paced game?

Talking of Mega Drive's, i'm really hooked on mine at the moment. It's really taking me back to when i was a kid. It's honestly a very strange feeling. The Mega Drive really does have an outstanding library of games though.

I managed to snag a really great condition Japanese MD with an original 6 button controller and RGB scart lead for a great price. Will replace my current battered Japanese MD i already have lol.

Mega Drives really need to be played on a CRT though :D

The device up scaled it for a 40 inch TV and the picture is very good I would say the same as a CRT and there was no lag from what I could tell, impressed for far :)

Dug out my old megadrive and SNES games from the loft. Not really a keen collector so I am going to try and shift this lot. Does anyone know the best way to value the games?

Dynamite Headdy!

Hardest game ever made IMO, pretty much impossible without using a level select to practice, unless you enjoy grinding for an hour to make it 2 seconds further into instadeth-land. Greatest game soundtrack too.

Only one retro purchase for me this month so far...copy of timesplitters 2 for the cube. Easily one of the best fps console games in existence.

On the retro front general had a lads night at friends house last weekend. LOTS of goldeneye 4 player played along with super monkey ball, perfect dark and timesplitters 2 (made we want to buy it again)
