Risen, out 2 October!

Played a few hours now and finding it really good fun, if rather brutal - though that probably stems from my holding off training melee to become a mage! The quests around harbour town were rather compelling though, lost a few hours just doing those.

This game looks interesting but I'm not sure if it's the kind of RPG I'd like or not. I'll have a look at the demo soon but before that, can someone who has it tell me a bit about it -

What kind of character classes and development does this game use?
Fighter/mage/thief/etc, or more simplified one-class-does-all but train skills as you see fit?

To answer both of these you earn 'learning points' each time you level which can be spent at trainers you find around the world on skills OR stats. Stats are generally 1 point/lvl (+ some gold) and enchance your melee/ranged/magic abilities.
Combat and Secondary skills are usually 10 pts/lvl + gold and improve your ability through new moves, spells and styles.
You can also enhance stats through various foods/books around the world too.
Im 6 hours in and currently undergoing training to become a mage. The choices you make (Though relatively obviously to ensure you dont blindly follow a path you dont want) determine the archtype from which you can ultimately actually receive training in.

What character-type choices do you make before you start the game (if any)?

None, you wash up in a shipwreck with absolutely nothing.

Which other RPGs would you compare it to?

Reminds me a fair bit of 'the Witcher' although has the old oblivion feeling of being able to explore an open world. Not as reinfed as either of these titles but definately a fun outing so far.

Just a basic question

Is there a choice for me to play in first-person view? I don't like looking over the character sholder at all. it doesn't draw me into the game at all and thats why i got into Oblivion/fallout 3 so easy

I really like this game.. it's got a great atmosphere. The only problem I have at the moment is that it is seriously brutal. If my concentration is not 100% in every battle I seem to get absolutely destroyed. Everything and everyone seems to be a million times stronger than you. I like a challenge, but this game is just masochistic.

Is there an option to use a gamepad for this game? I prefer using a pad rather than mouse/keyboard. I know that it's out on the 360, but that version got slated pretty bad.

Against my better judgement I bought the game and now it's not even starting at all. I try launching the game from Steam 'My Games' and for all practical purposes, the execute command seems to vanish into a blackhole.

Was like this for me at 1st. Trying to beat those wolves terrorizing a farm was just nasty. Got my mage training now though and 1 shotting the same wolves with my fireball. Great feeling of revenge!
Really enjoying exploring the island now - theres a lot of awesome hidden/unique areas which feed my adventerous side in these games.

Its no GOTY for me but if you get past the first feeling weak as hell stage you really do get sucked in. For anyone having problems I would suggest doing some quests that involve little or no fighting (Like thos in harbour town) to get points with which to upgrade your skills.

Just tried the demo.

Graphics - terrible

Control - Aweful, feels rubbery and has no feeling.

Voice acting - shockingly bad

Character design - even worse

Will deffinetly NOT be buying it. Can't believe they compared it for Fallout 3, it doesn't even come close.

I tried the demo and thought it was okay!

Graphics - Okay, not brilliant but good enough. You don't need bleeding edge graphics to make a good RPG.

Control - Acceptable. Good enough for me to be able to put up with them if the story/atmosphere is good.

Voice acting - standard level for most RPGs. Hoping it gets better for the major characters, rather than the throwaway beginning people you'll never see again.

Character design - WAY too early to tell.

Overall, not convincing enough for me to go out and buy it now, but I might pick it up when it comes down in price (which I can imagine happening quite quickly).

If I hear more good things about it from people here, particularly about the world, story and characters, I might buy it sooner as I need a good RPG to see me through until DA:O is released.
